PIH DURING

COVID 19

PREPARED BY:
MS. KARISHMA SHROFF
Introduction

Hypertension is one of the common
medical complications of pregnancy
and contributes significantly to
maternal and perinatal morbidity and
mortality.
Hypertension is a sign of an underlying
pathology, which may be pre-existing
or appears for the first time during
pregnancy.
Cont..

High blood pressure during pregnancy can
put mother and baby at risk during normal
circumstances. But with the novel
coronavirus spreading rapidly, many are
wondering how this highly contagious threat
may affect them.
The good news is, thus far, nothing
researchers have learned about COVID-19
raises additional concerns for pregnant
women – even if their blood pressure runs
high.
Cont..

 Researchers are still learning how COVID-19 affects
pregnant women,"It's important for women who
have medical complications to stay in very close
touch with their doctor and other health care
professionals who are taking care of them during
their pregnancy.“
 And researchers know that high blood pressure
disorders during pregnancy are one of the leading
causes of maternal death worldwide – suggesting
further investigation is warranted.

The term, “Pregnancy-induced
hypertension (PIH)” is defined as the
hypertension that develops as a direct
result of the gravid state.
It includes
(i) gestational hypertension,
(ii) preeclampsia and
(iii) eclampsia.
PREECLAMPSIA

DEFINITION:
Preeclampsia is a multisystem
disorder of unknown etiology
characterized by development of
hypertension to the extent of 140/90 mm
Hg or more with proteinuria after the
20th week in a previously normotensive
and nonproteinuric woman.
