The number of sharia banking customers in Indonesia reached 23.18 million at the end of August 2018. There are at least four reasons for the small market share of Islamic banks in Indonesia according to Kariastanto: lack of awareness among Muslims about Islamic banks, inferior infrastructure and quality compared to conventional banks, conventional banks have non-technical advantages, and lack of full government support for Islamic banking as shown by no state money being deposited in Islamic banks.

According to Kariastanto, there are at least four possible reasons why the market share of Islamic banks is still small in Indonesia.
1. The lack of Muslim awareness about Islamic banks.
2. The infrastructure and quality of Islamic banks are significantly less than conventional banking. 3. conventional banks have non-technical advantages compared to Islamic banks. As a result, the benefits of sharia banking that can meet wider demands, namely sharia and conventional services are not achieved. 4. The lack of full support from the government for Islamic banking. That is proven by the absence of a single rupiah of state money entrusted to Islamic banking.
