What is Wireless Sensor
Networks (WSN)?

“.. is an infrastructure comprised of sensing
(measuring), computing, and communication
elements that gives an administrator the ability to
instrument, observe, and react to events and
phenomena in a specified environment..”

KAZEM SOHRABY, 2007

WSN’s Category

Category 1 WSNs (C1WSNs):

• mesh-based systems with multi hop radio connectivity among or between
WNs.
• utilizing dynamic routing in both the wireless and wireline portions of the
network.
• Military theater systems typically belong to this category.

Category 2 WSNs (C2WSNs):

• point-to-point or multipoint-to-point (star based).
• single-hop radio connectivity to WNs.
• utilizing static routing over the wireless network.
• typically, only one route from the WNs to the companion terrestrial/wireline
forwarding node.
• Residential control systems typically belong to this category.

Sensor and Robots

The concept of using WSN for sensor and robots is how to make mobile robotics use WSNs to
achieve ubiquitous computing environments. For example, Intel envisions mobile robots acting
as gateways into wireless sensor networks, such as into the Smart Dust networks of wireless
motes. These robots embody sensing, actuation, and basic (miniaturized) robotics functions.

Two questions of interest are:

• Can a mobile robot act as a gateway into a wireless sensor network?
• Can sensor networks take advantage of a robot’s mobility and intelligence?
Sensor and Robots: How to Communicate?

While a mobile robot act as a gateway, one major issue is how to

communicate between the robot and the sensor network?
To bridge the gap between robotics and wireless networks, a sensor network
can be equipped with IEEE 802.11 capabilities. With this way, the other
motes in the network then utilize each other as links to reach the 802.11-
equipped hubs; the hubs forward the data packets to the main 802.11-capable
gateway, which is usually a PC or laptop. Using some motes as hubs reduces
the number of hops that any one data packet has to make to reach the main
gateway, and also reduces power consumption across the sensor network.

Military Application

Sensor Networks were initially designed for military operations and

surveillance. WSNs have been emerged as an excellent tool for military
applications involving intrusion detection, various parameter monitoring,
information gathering and, smart logistics support in an unknown deployed
area. These networks can provide different services to military and air force
like information collection, battlefield surveillance and attack detection.
Because of their capabilities of real time transmission, WSNs play an
important role in military operations.

Highway Monitoring

The ITSs attempt to manage optimally the urban traffic by enhancing safety,
reducing travel time and fuel consumption at the aim of improving our daily
life. It works as a control loop system where it senses traffic and road
conditions using surveillance or detection system. The gathered information
is communicated to the decision system to be organized and analyzed in
order to take appropriate decisions.
Highway Monitoring

The application of ICTs to the road transport allows talking about “smart
roads” which are those ways with information systems working in real time.
Smart roads make available, for example, control and regulation in accesses
to the cities, information captures regarding to measurements of traffic
intensity, speed and incidents,
linear control of the route, control of incomes for the route, information
about itineraries, help service or electronic payments (gate tolls).
Highway Monitoring: Advantage

 Minimize congestion of the whole traffic network and optimize the use of road
capacity.
 Transmit information related to accidents and weather in order to reduce the
number and severity of crashes that lowers the number of deaths and injuries.
 Various policies and programs that result in more efficient use of parking
resources
 Measures and displays the instantaneous speed of a vehicle and then reduce the
accident.
 Management and efficiency tollgates payment.
 Navigate the tour, minimize cost, time, and fuel consumption

Building Automation

What is Building Automation? Building automation most broadly refers to

creating centralized, networked systems of hardware and software monitors and
controls a building’s facility systems (electricity, lighting, plumbing, HVAC,
water supply, etc.)

When facilities are monitored and controlled in a seamless fashion, this creates a
much more reliable working environment for the building’s tenants. Furthermore,
the efficiency introduced through automation allows the building’s facility
management team to adopt more sustainable practices and reduce energy costs.
