OBJECTIVE

• To increase the overall heat transfer coefficient and to find

effectiveness in double cross flow shell and tube heat
exchanger and comparing them with staggered type shell and
tube heat exchanger.
• To simulate the fluid flow and heat transfer in staggered
type and double cross flow heat exchanger using CFD and to
investigate pressure drop, velocity distribution and
temperature distribution.
INTRODUCTION

• Heat exchanger is a device that is used to transfer thermal

energy between two or more fluids.
• In double cross flow shell and tube heat exchanger, water
passes through the tube and air passes over the tube.

DOUBLE CROSS FLOW HEAT EXCHANGER

5
DIMENSIONS OF HEAT EXCHANGER

SHELL:
• Material –mild steel
• Length -100cm
• Height -15x15 cm
• Coating –aluminium
TUBE:
• Material –copper
• Diameter -12mm

6
Equipment used:
•Data logger
•Thermocouple
•Heater

Experimental parameters:

•Pressure drop
•Effectiveness
•Overall heat transfer coefficient

7
Working

• When hot air is passed through shell, heat is transferred from

air to water passing through the tubes.
• Inlet and outlet temperatures are measured with the help of
thermocouples.
• Pressure drop between inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger is
measured.

8
METHODOLOGY

 Arranging the experimental setup

 Choosing the process parameters to be evaluated.
 Conducting the experiment and find out the values.
 Comparing these values into previous values and to decide the
future work on it .
