 A word that can function by itself as a noun phrase and that refers
either to the participants in the discourse (e.g., I, you ) or to
someone or something mentioned elsewhere in the discourse (e.g.,
she, it, this ).
 Pronouns are words that are used in place of nouns. These words act
Types of Words: like nouns and refer to something that was already identified during
the conversation. Some of the most useful types of pronoun are
Pronouns personal pronouns, which are used in place of people or things.

 Examples include:
I/we/you/she/he/it/they
 These words allow us to speak more freely, without needing to keep
repeating a noun that has already been identified.

Types of Words:  For example, instead of saying: “Jack was hungry, so Jack opened
Jack’s backpack and took out Jack’s sandwich”

 We can say: “Jack was hungry, so he opened his backpack and took
out his sandwich”.

The Pronouns Game

Come together to play the pronouns game. We will


say the pronouns and you will either stand alone, point
to someone else, join your friends, or make groups.
How Do I Use Your
Pronouns Correctly?
 Prepositions express relationships between other words. They can
exist as single words, or as prepositional phrases which contain
several words together.
 Prepositions indicate direction, time, location, and spatial
relationships, as well as other abstract types of relationships.

Types of Words: Direction: Look to the left and you’ll see our destination.

Prepositions
Time: We’ve been working since this morning.

Location: We saw a movie at the theater.

Space: The dog hid under the table.

Game

There is a table, and there are some objects on it.


Students will circle the table and describe the objects'
positions in relation to each other.
 An adverb is a more advanced part of speech that changes a verb or
adjective with reference to place, time, manner or degree.

 Examples of adverbs:
Types of Words:
Adverbs Very, thoroughly (degree)
Here, there (place)
Badly, wonderfully (manner)
Later, earlier, yesterday, tomorrow (time)
