Formula:
P(n,r)= n!
(n-r)!

• Recall that n is the number of possible choices


and r is the number of selections actually made.
Example:

1) Suppose we have a 6 different potted plants and


we wish to arranged 4 of them in a row. In how
many ways can this be done?
= 360 ways
2) Find the number of permutations using 4 different
letters a,b,c and d if they are taken 2 at a time.
= 12 permutations
1)When Jhon reached the school, his teacher said
that he has to choose 2 more clubs from the 4
remaining clubs. In how many ways can he choose
the 2 clubs?
2) They want to eat pizza in the school canteen, you
can choose 4 toppings out of 6 toppings to put on
your pizza. In how many ways they can choose the
4 toppings?
3)Fifteen cars enter a race. In how many different
ways could trophies for first, second and third
place be awarded?
4)A license plate begins with three letters. If the
possible letters are A, B, C, D and E how many
different permutations of these letters can be made
if no letter is used more than once?
5)In how many ways can a president, a treasurer and
a secretary be chosen from among 7 candidates?
