Densing, Nikki Lou U. High Quality Children's Literature - is important because it provides students with opportunities to respond to literature; it gives students appreciation about their own cultural heritage as well as those of others; it helps students develop emotional intelligence and creativity; it nurtures growth and development of the student’s personality and social skills; and it transmits important literature and themes from one generation to the next. There are multiple criteria for selecting excellent children’s picture books. Most importantly, we must choose the right book for the right child in the right situation. It should be a book that has “high literary merit” and one the child enjoys. Parents and teachers are in the best position to determine what books are appropriate. However, students can also be taught how to choose books for themselves.
