• COST – Mental effort, Anxiety, embarrassment, time,


frustration. Etc

REWARDS – Pleasurable outcomes, companionship,


belonging, achievement, satisfaction, status etc.
• The theory predicts that as long as rewards
outweigh the cost, then group membership is
profitable and an individual will stay in the
relationship or group.
