Pericarditis - refers to an inflammation of the pericardium, the
membranous sac enveloping the heart.

Tamponade - Cardiac tamponade is the accumulation of fluid around the heart


muscle, which places excessive pressure on this organ.
Etiology

 Upper Respiratory Infection


 Idiopathic
 Increasing Chest Pain
 Trauma
 Malignancy
 CT Disease
Modifiable Risk Factors

• LIFESTYLE
• USE OF TOBACCO/SMOKING
• UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTION
Non Modifiable Risk Factors
 Age – 20 to 50 years olds
 Gender – most common in men
 Ethnicity - (African-American ethnicity is highly
associated with the development of PERICARDITIS)
 Family History of Sarcoidosis
 Pericardiocentsesis
