Approaching ship turned
out to be a ghost ship
having a lady and her
companion, the theme
of false hope arises,
alongside supernatural
elements.
For the ship was sailing
“without a breeze,
without a tide”, and was
described as “Are those
her ribs through which
the Sun Did peer,”,
Theme of imprisonment and fate.
The mariner observes that
Death and Life-in-Death
were playing dice for the
ship’s crew, “And the twain
were casting dice”, to which
Life-in-Death announced
“The game is done! I’ve
won! I’ve won!” Life-in-
Death won the soul of the
mariner
