During the Spanish colonial era, literary works by Filipino
poets and writers were not highly recognized by the colonizers. It was until Jose Rizal wrote his novels and poems that Filipino literature was noticed. Although Rizal wrote mostly in Spanish and Filipino, his works have been recognized by scholars around the world and hence, have been translated into different languages. Fernando Bagonbanta was one of the early
native versifiers of the seventeenth century and was known as a ladino, the name given to natives who mastered the Spanish language. Ladino was also used to designate those literary works which were actually Spanish romances and poems. SONGS
Songs are short poems set to music or
