3D PRINTING: DEVELOPMENT AND FUTURE
• Additive manufacturing technology is
becoming more popular manufacture
method component by adding material
successively layer by layer until final
structure is created.
• It is a bottom-up work-flow approach, in
stark contrast to the conventional
subtractive techniques.
• Additive manufacturing is also known as
3D-printing technology.
• 3D-printing has received high attention and
attraction in various area of application due
to its versatility: Automotive industry,
Aerospace industry, Healthcare and
medical industry, Architecture, building, and
construction industry
POLYMER MATRIX NANO-COMPOSITES
• A nanocomposite is a composite where one
of the phases exhibits grain sizes measured
in nanometers(nm).
• The use of nanomaterials as fillers is to
significantly improve the mechanical,
thermal, electrical, morphological properties
of materials and enhance multifunctionality.
• Polymer nanocomposite materials commonly
use filler or reinforcement material such as
carbon nanotubes (CNTs), Graphene, carbon
fiber, (Nano-HAp), Aluminum Nano-powders
and others.
• The properties of Nano composite material
depend on both composition of filler material
and its’ distribution throughout the matrix
material
3D PRINTING OF NANOCOMPOSITES
• For last couple of decade, polymer become the foremost integral material in
3D manufacturing process. Until today, it has continued to be most important
material in 3D printing processes due to vast majority of 3D printing processes
use.
• Materials are selected and used for 3D printing according to their application
area and the production technique.
• Different types of nanofillers such as carbon nanofillers, nanoclay, and
metallic nanofillers have been incorporated into a wide range of hydrogels and
polymer matrices, which includes both thermoplastics and thermosetting
resins.
• Metallic reinforements: Al alloys, Co-based alloys, Ni-based alloys, stainless
steels and Ti alloys
• Ceramic reinforcements: hydroxyapatite (HA), silica (SiO2), bioactive-glass
(BG), zirconia (ZrO2), tricalcium phosphate (TCP), and alumina (Al2O3)
• Polymer and Hydrogel matrix: Polylactic acid (PLA), acrylonitrile butadiene
styrene (ABS), polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE)

APPLICATIONS OF 3D PRINTED NANOCOMPOSITES
• The excellent thermal and mechanical
properties of Graphene nanoplatelet
(GNPs) filled with LLDPE are made to
make heat sink ultra-high power electronic
devices.
• Light weight nano composite made from
CNT and PLA mixed in DCM solvent are
applied in Electromagnetic Interference
(EMI) shielding. Graphene, carbonyl iron
powder (CIP) and Poly Methyl
Methacrylate (PMMA) were also 3D printed
used absorb or shield unwanted bandwidth
microwaves.
• HBN polymer nano composite is a
potential material to be used in recently
developing bioelectronic technologies.
• Gelatin-based film (BSG/ZnO/CEO) from
which biodegradable, biocompatible and
antimicrobial material can be made
