BRIEF HISTORY
District Swat is one of the old and historical areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, having an area of
5337 Km2and a dense population of 2.31 million. Due to its snowbound mountains, hilly terrain
plenty of rainfalls, the likelihood of floods and flash floods is very high in the region. In 2010, the
region was hit by rainfalls and severe floods due to which the infrastructure of the District was
also damaged.
In addition to the damages caused to the residential and public building, most of the bridges on
different roads were completely washed away and the access to various areas was
disconnected. The collapse of bridges and lack of access significantly affected restoration work
initiated by both the local and foreign agencies. Being the lifelines, provision of access to the
flood hit areas was the utmost need of the hour and this was why many pre-fabricated
bridges/bridge panels were donated by various countries namely Canada, UK, USA etc. for
which the necessary structure works like abutments etc. were carried out on emergent basis.
The Pak army also assisted the flood hit region and provided their technical support in
providing/launching and installing these bridge panels.
Now, a new scheme has been proposed under which all these steel bridges be de-launched and
handed over to Pak Army to utilize the same in case of any emergency and replace/re-construct
these bridges with permanent RCC Bridges for which the sub-structure has already been
completed. Hence the scheme “F/S and Design of Conversion of 40 No. of existing steel bridges
to RCC Bridges including new bridges (DFID Assisted, ACROW /NATO Canadian Steel Bridges
provided by Pak Army)” has been reflected under the ADP No. 1707/200326 (2020-21) for the
needful.
