WHILE IS USED…

We use WHILE to link two continuous actions


that happened at the same time in the past.
We use while when an action was done and
another one was in progress.
PAST CONTINUOUS + WHILE + PAST CONTINUOUS
SIMPLE PAST + WHILE + PAST CONTINUOUS
WHEN IS USED…

 We use when to link a long action and a short action.


 We use the past continuous tense for long action. We use
the simple past for short actions.
 When is used to know that a long action was interrupted
by a short action.

PAST CONTINUOUS + WHEN + SIMPLE PAST


NOTE:

When the clause with WHEN or


WHILE comes at the beginninh,
we put a comma after it.
EXAMPLES:

 I was cooking dinner WHILE they were playing video-games.


 He called me WHILE I was taking a shower.
 She was watching TV WHEN the light went off.

 WHILE they were playing video-games, I was cooking dinner.


 WHILE I was taking a shower, he called me.
 WHEN the light went off, she was watching TV.
TO REMEMBER:

Always use past continuous after WHILE.

Always use simple past after WHEN.
