Why would you use Soil Health Monitoring System

• Over the last few years there has been a lot of interest in Soil Health
Monitoring System (SHMS). This is partly due to the rising cost of water
and the associated need to improve water productivity.

• It is also a result of on-farm irrigation system upgrades and irrigation

supply system modernization. Irrigators who have experienced these
improvements are finding they have more control over water on their farm
and are better positioned to use tools that help them match irrigations with
plant needs.

• Soil Moisture Monitoring is used to assist with scheduling irrigations to

minimize plant stress and the economic losses that under-irrigation and
over-irrigation can have on crop yield and quality. It will also help you
avoid the costly environmental effects of over-irrigation including wasted
water and energy, leaching of nutrients or agricultural chemicals into
groundwater, and degradation of surface waters with contaminated
irrigation runoff.
Introduction
• For agricultural development, selection of proper soil is a major criteria
for boosting the cultivation. For that, soil testing is a very important
parameter to enhance the agricultural outcome. Nowadays the current
soil testing is a manual type which is very lengthy and there is a chance
of occurrence of human errors. Therefore the modern approach of soil
testing is inevitable. Soil testing is done using modern technique which
is simple to design, consumes less time and is less expensive. The soil
type prediction contribute significantly towards agriculture to expand the
yield creation. To avoid manual measurement of soil parameters,
different types of sensors are used to calculate various parameters of
the soil, such as soil moisture, soil temperature and soil nutrients like
Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium. Depending on the soil
parameters values, type of the soil is predicted.

• Having a significant impact on the crop, the soil nutrient monitoring is

important. Lack of monitoring soil nutrient because people suffer from
various disease due to chemical fertilizers. The benefits of optimizing
irrigation scheduling with soil moisture sensors includes increasing crop
yields, saving water, protecting local water resources from runoff, saving
on energy costs, saving on fertilizer costs and increasing the farm’s
profitability.
Objectives

• To develop a cost effective and automated model to monitor and regulate

the moisture level of a soil sample mainly aimed to cater to the needs of
technologically ignorant rural farmers.

• To identify the impacts of fertilizers and soil nutrients in agriculture.

• To test the feasibility of indigenous sensors (resistance blocks) instead of

using commercially available ones.

• Improving the effectiveness of soil protection measures; and Raising

public awareness on soil degradation.

• Reduce the manpower and conserve the water.

• Real time sensing and control.

• To observe other parameters for better yield.

Advantages
• Increase in productivity.

• Reduced water consumption.

• Safe.

• No manpower required.

• Reduce soil erosion and nutrient leaching.

• Require smaller water sources.

• Efficient and saves times.

• Lowered operation cost.

Conclusion

• The proposed method helped in collecting the parameters present in the

soil using different sensors by taking the help of the Arduino. The
collected information is then used for soil type prediction. This was
achieved by using supervised machine learning algorithms like Linear
Regression, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest Classifier.

• The application was developed using a serverless approach which

requires less development effort and cost. As this system is nearing to the
automation, the farmers can now invest their time and hard work
effectively. This will act as a simple solution for the farmers with the
necessary information required to obtain great yield and therefore
maximizing their production.

• A specialized approach is being used to design the soil monitoring system

for measurement and control of the plant growth parameter, i.e. soil
moisture. The data which we get from the measurement has shown that
the system performance is quite dependable and correct.

• With the neural networks we can use the same to predict seasonal
variations and rains in an area which can also help the farmers to plan
their future harvest which can be future work on this project
