About Gir National Park, Gujarat


Gir National Park is a national park in Gujarat that was established in 1965.
It is mostly forested and contains dry deciduous forests. Teak, Dudhlo, Ber,
Khair etc. are the trees that are found in Gir National Park.
Flora in Gir National Park
Flora in Gir National Park consists of a mixed deciduous
forest interspersed with semi-evergreen and evergreen
trees, scrub jungle, large patches of grasslands and rocky
hills. It is the largest dry deciduous forest in Western
India. The forest remains dry for most part of the year
with scrub trees like babul and a few flowering trees.
The trees on the hills are sparse and short.
Profit from Gir Park
The forest is an important biological research area with
considerable scientific, educational, aesthetic and recreational values. It
provides nearly 5 million kilograms of green grass by annual harvesting,
which is valued approximately at ₹ 500 million (US$7.12 million). The
forest provides nearly 123,000 metric tons worth of fuel wood annually.
Fauna found here
At present, Gir forests of Gujarat (India) is the only
place where this race of lions i.e. Asiatic lion is found
in its natural habitat. Gir Forests has a topography
made up of successive rugged ridges, isolated hills,
plateaus and valleys. It also have animals like Leopard,
Hyena etc.
