Good Morning…

Molecules
and
Ions
What is molecule?
-a molecule is an aggregate of at least two
atoms in a definite arrangement held together
by chemical forces (also called chemical
bonds)
-A molecule may contain atoms of the same
element or atoms two or more elements
joined in a fixed ratio, in accordance with the
law of definite proportions.

- Like atoms, molecule are electrically neutral.

2 Types of Molecule

*Diatomic molecule

*Polyatomic molecule
Diatomic molecule

-is a type of molecule that contains only two

atoms

-can also contain atoms of different

elements
Example of Diatomic molecule

Hydrogen (H2)
Nitrogen (N2)
Oxygen (O2)
Fluorine (F2)
Chlorine (Cl2)
Bromine (Br2)
Iodine (I2)
Polyatomic molecule
- A molecule containing more than two atoms
Example of Polyatommic molecule

Water (H2O)
Ammonia (NH3)
What is Ion?
-is an atom or a group of atoms that has a net
positive or negative charge.
Cation & Anion
Cation
-A positively charged ion, one that would be
attracted to the cathode in electrolysis.
Anion
-A negatively charged ion, one that would be
attracted to the anode in electrolysis.
Note:

-The number of positively charge protons in the

nucleus of an atom remains the same during
ordinary chemical changes (called chemical
reactions), but negatively charge electrons
may be lost or gained.
In addition two or more atoms can combine to
form an ion that has a net positive or net
negative charge.
