INTRODUCTION

Poverty as a phenomenon has existed since the beginning of known history. Poverty is a condition where a person
cannot maintain its financial condition and essential for basic human needs.

-It is a condition of extremely lower standard of living that is appeared to be spread in mass nowadays.

-Poverty in india is seen mainly in the rural areas because of the uneducated and unemployed and increased number
of population. People do not afford to get proper foods for their daily life and even they don’t have their own homes,
they sleep on the footpath or road, more populations need more food, money, and for staying houses but due to lack of
this poverty grows very quickly, thus in addition rich are growing richer and the poor becoming more poorer which
becomes difficult to fill the gap.

- India is one of the poorest countries in the world. According to a research India have over 73 million people living
in extreme poverty which makes up 3% of its total population.
-Indiais a country where poverty is one of the major problem.  There are many reasons
for poverty.

-Unemployment= is factor causing poverty in India. The ever-increasing population has

led to a higher number of job-seekers. However, there is not enough expansion in
opportunities to match this demand for jobs.

-Population=India has the second largest population in the world with 136.64
crores people. So, employment ratio is less and it is a very difficult challenge for the
government to provide all the necessary facilities to that amount of people.

-Lack of Education=literacy is also one of the major problems. Lack of education results
in not having enough qualifications to do any job.. Individuals do not have enough
willpower to do hard work and earn money hence results in poverty.

-Geographical Factors=Natural calamities like droughts, excess rain, floods damage

agricultural production to a very high extent and as a vast majority of Indian population
earn their money from farming, it gets very difficult to earn money from farming
There are basically two types of poverty – ABSOLUTE POVERTY AND RELATIVE
POVERTY

- ABSOLUTE POVERTY- is when household income is below a certain level, which

makes it impossible for the person or family to meet basic needs of life including food,
shelter, safe drinking water, education, healthcare, etc.

- RELATIVE POVERTY- It is a level of household income which is considerably less

than median income of the country. It is the lack of resources when compared to other
members of the society.

* There are many effects that are done by poverty .Some of them are -

- Homelessness - or extreme poverty, carries with it a particularly strong set of risks for
families, especially children. Compared to children living in poverty but having homes,
homeless children are less likely to receive proper nutrition and immunization. Hence,
they experience more health problems.
-Health issue -One of the most devastating effects that poverty has is on the overall
health of the nation.  Children over time suffer from severe health problems like low body
weight, mental, physical disabilities, nutrient deficiencies, impaired vision, and a general
poor state of immunity making them susceptible to diseases.

-Effect on Economy-The number of people living under the poverty threshold indicates
whether the economy is powerful enough to generate adequate jobs and comforts for its
people. Schemes providing subsidies for the poor of the country again impose a drain on
the economy.

* Although poverty is a huge problem and it cannot be stopped in a short amount of time,

but with some changes and the right steps we can reduce the poverty. Following are the
steps to reduce poverty.
- People from poverty aren’t aloof to the right to proper education, there are
associations that are reaching these places and providing the future of India the right
to an education that they deserve.

- Today most of the industries seek skilled labourers and workers. The government
must introduce new programs for people to learn basic skills that can help them find
jobs. Development of vocational and technical skills is also very important to eradicate
poverty from the country.

- India’s poverty crisis also arises from the dearth of basic infrastructure like schools,
hospitals, toilets, electricity and non-polluting heating options. The government must
look to invest in the infrastructure of the country, which can go a long way and help
build an environment suitable for enterprise development and income generation.
