WHAT IS?
Herpes is an infection caused by a herpes
simplex virus (HSV). Oral herpes causes sores
around the mouth or on the face. Genital herpes
is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It can
affect the genitals, buttocks, or the anus area.
Other herpes infections can affect the eyes,
skin, or other parts of the body. The virus can
be dangerous in newborns or in people with
weakened immune systems.
SYMPSTOMS
Most people infected with the herpes simplex virus do not know
they have it because they do not have signs or symptoms, or
because they are very mild.
When they do occur, symptoms can appear between two and
twelve days after exposure to the virus. If you experience
symptoms of genital herpes, they may include the following:
Pain or itching: You may experience pain and tenderness in the
genital area until the infection clears.
Small red bumps or tiny white blisters: They may appear a few
days or weeks after infection.
Ulcers: Ulcers can form when blisters break and ooze or bleed.
Ulcers can cause painful urination.
Scabs: The skin will crust over as the ulcers heal
The sores appear where the infection entered the body. The
infection can spread by touching a sore and then rubbing or
scratching another area of the body, including the eyes.
Men and women can get sores on the following parts of the body:
Buttocks and thighs
Year
Mouth
Urethra (the tube that allows urine to drain from the bladder to
the outside)
Women can also get sores on the following parts of the body:
Vaginal area
External genitalia
