What do you think biodiversity
means?
Biodiversity
What does “Bio” mean?

Bio =
Biodiversity

What does “Diversity” mean?

Diversity = Variety
Biodiversity is the variety of life
on Earth and the essential
interdependence of all living
things

• Scientists have identified more

than 1.4 million species. Tens of
millions -- remain unknown .
 Communities with
many different
species (a high
index of diversity)
will be able to
withstand
environmental
changes better than
communities with
only a few species (a
low index of
diversity).
INDEX OF DIVERSITY

Index of Diversity (ID)

=Number of species X Number of runs
Number of trees
Population - is
a group of
organisms of
the same
species that
live in a certain
area.
Limiting Factors
- anything that limits the size of a population
 Birth rate and death rate
 Availability of food and water
 Living conditions
 Light and temperature
 Soil nutrients
Carrying Capacity

The maximum population size an environment

can support. If the population size rises above
the carrying capacity, organisms die because
they cannot meet all their needs.
Endangered Species
- When population
becomes low that
only few remain

Threatened Species

 Particular species that declines so fast that it

becomes endangered.
 As of 1991, 89 species of birds, 44 species of
mammals and 8 species of birds are
internationally recognized as threatened

 Example: Philippine eagle

Extinction

 Is the disappearance of a species when the

last of its members die.
Factors Affecting the
Decrease of Population
1. Deforestation
 Kaingin Farming
 Illegal Logging
 Conversion of Agricultural lands to housing
projects
 Forest fires
 typhoons
Factors Affecting the
Biodiversity
2. Water Pollution
Eutrophication – concentration of organic
nutrients from the domestic garbage are thrown
on bodies of water.

3. Air Pollution
Greenhouse Effect
Global Warming

Biodiversity
4. Destruction of Coastal Resources
Deforestation
Dynamite fishing
Coastal areas conversion to
beach resorts
Overharvesting

Biodiversity
5. Acid Precipitation
-Also known as acid rain
-Rainwater became too acidic
due to accumulation of sulfur
and nitrogen oxides
