Sofia cordova 7mo A
History of the moais
The origin of the first moai dates from 700 AD to 1,600 AD. There are more than 900
volcanic rock structures, distributed throughout the island

Who created the moais?

The more than nine hundred known moai sculpted by the ancient Rapa Nui are distributed throughout
the island. Most of them were carved in the tuff of the Rano Raraku volcanic cone, where more than
four hundred moai remain in different phases of construction.

Most of the moai were built with volcanic stone. ... These huge statues were carved in the
same quarry, at a high point of the volcano. They first carved the head and gave it its basic
shape. The piece was then separated from the bedrock and moved down the slope with ropes.

They were built by the ancient Rapa Nui

History of Rapanui
Located in the eastern corner of Polynesia, Easter Island has a very particular
history. Since its initial colonization by Polynesian immigrants, its extreme
isolation favored the development of a culture with unique traits in the world,
which archeology has managed to rebuild.

Moai from Easter Island. Moai are the famous stone statues characteristic of
Easter Island. These are monolithic or carved sculptures on a single block of
stone. Each moai represents, according to the most accepted theories, a deceased
ancestor.
When did the Rapa Nui appear?
Apparently the British pirate Edward Davis sighted the island in 1686, marking it as "Davis
Land". The oldest document on the island's population corresponds to the Dutchman Jakob
Roggeveen, who rediscovered the island on Sunday, April 5, 1722, the day of Easter: hence its
current name.
