Verb Agreement
Subject Verb Agreement is one of the grammars in English, which is very important to
form standard sentences in English, and Subject Verb Agreement is a rematch between verbs
and subject tittle in terms of numbers, namely : singular or plural. Subject can be nouns,
pronouns, or other constructions that act as nouns, such as gerunds and infinitives.
Basically, the singular subject (single subject) uses a singular verb , while the plural subject
uses a plural verb.

Subject- verb agreement is a rapprochement between the verb with the subject in terms of
number, namely : singular or plural. Subjects can be a noun, pronoun, or other construction
acting as a noun , like gerund and infinitive . Basically, the singular subject use the singular
verb , while plural subject using a plural verb . Generally in the present tense , singular verb
form base form of the verb with the added suffix -s . As for the plural verb with no added
suffix -s. These rules also apply verb on the subject in the form of a third person ( third
person , for example: Ricky , Anna ) and all personal pronouns (they , we = plural ; he, she ,

The Rules Of Subject Verb Agreement
According to Philips states some regulations of subject-verb
agreement which are stated follow:

 Make verbs agree after prepositional phrases

Sometimes prepositional phrases can come between the subject and the verb. If the
object of the preposition is singular and the subject is plural, or if the object of the
preposition is plural and the subject is singular, there can be confusion in making the
subject and the verb agree For example:
The key (to the doors) is in the drawer
The keys (to the doors) are in the drawer

 Make verbs agree after expression of quantity

A particular agreement problem occurs when the subject is an expression of quantity,
such as all, most, or some, followed by the preposition of. In this situation, the subject
(all, most,or some) can be singular or plural, depending on what follows the
preposition of.
 Subject-verb agreement after inverted verbs
When the subject and verb are inverted, it can be difficult to locate threm, and it can therefore be
a problem to make them agree
From instance:
(Behind the house) was the bicycles I wanted
(Behind the houses) were the bicycle I wanted

 Make verbs agree after certain words

Certain words in English are always grammatically singular, even though they might have plural
meaning. These words or expressions are grammatically singular, so they take singular verbs:

anybody everybody nobody somebody

anyone everyone No one someone
anything everything nothing something
For example: Everybody are going to the theater
Even though the understanding from this example that a lot of people are going to the theater,
everybody is singular and requires a singular verb. The plural verb are going should be changed
to the singular verb is going
04
Use of subject verb agreement
a. Collective Noun

According from Wall Street English collective noun is a noun that is used to express the name of a group
(consisting of more than one member). As a subject, this noun can be singular or plural depending on the context.
If group members do the same thing simultaneously, then this noun is considered as a subject unit with a singular
verb
On the other hand, when members of the group act individually, they are considered as plural
subjects with plural verbs.
Example:
➢ The team is going on holiday now ( Para anggota (bersama-sama) sedang pergi berlibur
sekarang)
➢ The team are going on holiday now (Para anggota ( masing- masing) sedang berlibur
sekarang)
b. Compound Noun
Reporting from Your Dictionary, a compound sentence is • If the compound subject consists of
two subjects that are in one sentence. There are several positive and negative subjects (singular and
conditions to determine when we change the verb to be plural), the verb follows the positive.
plural or singular Example: The staff but not the manager
have received their salaries (Para staff tapi
• If two or more subjects, both singular and plural, are tidak sang manager telah menerima gaji)
connected by the coordinating • If the compound subject that uses "or" or
conjunction “and”, then the plural verb is used. "nor" consists of a singular and a plural
Example: Ichel and her brother go to school by bus (Ichel noun or pronoun, then the verb follows the
dan kakak laki-lakinya pergi ke subject closest to it, either before or after it
sekolah dengan bus) (question sentence).
• If two or more singular subjects are connected by “or” Example: The woman or her friends eat
or “nor”, a singular verb is used. The lunch here every monday (Wanita itu atau
