Types of Question Tags

There are two types of Question Tags

1. Confirmation = reconfirms the sentence


Example: Snow is white, isn’t it? (isn’t = is not)
2. Imperative (usually use the modal verbs)
a) Invitation = to invite
b) Order = to give order/command

Example: Take a seat, won’t you? (Won’t = will not)


Things to remember

Things to remember
1. If the statement is positive, then the question tag is negative
2. If the statement is negative, then the question tag is positive
3. The end of the question tag is a subject pronoun (he, she, it, I,
you, they, we)
Subject Pronoun

Example: Mr Sean washes the clothes every morning, doesn’t he?

• Can
• Could
• Will
• Would
• Shall
• Should
• May
• Must
• Might

Example: I can write a book, can’t I?


To be

• Is/was
• Am
• Are/were

Example:
These books are read once a week, aren’t they?
