 MODIFIERS
● The noun phrase may have more than one pre-modifier or post-modifier:
Eg: A short black hair (example from our own group)
Eg: A nasty gash on his chin which needed medical attention (example from book)
● There are two post-modifiers in the last example because each separately modifies gash:
Eg1: a nasty gash on his chin (example from book)
Eg2: a nasty gash which needed medical attention (example from book)
● The modifier may itself be modified:
Eg: An absolutely nice decision (example from our own group)
● A modifier may also be discontinuous, one part coming before the noun and the other part after it:
Eg: The most suitable clothes to wear (example from our own group)
● Compare :
Eg: The clothes (that is) most suitable to wear (example from our own group)

RELATIVE CLAUSES
● Relative clause is a very common type of post-modifier in a noun phrase. The relative clause is
embedded in the noun phrase.
Eg1: He had a nasty gash. The gash needed medical attention. (example from book)
 He had a nasty gash which needed medical attention.

+ The two sentences share nouns (gash) that refer to the same thing.
Eg2: The man is a famous actor. The man was sitting next to you. (example of our own group)
 The man (The man was sitting next to you) is a famous actor.
 The man who was sitting next to you is a famous actor.
● In both [Eg1] and [Eg2] the relative pronoun can be replaced by relative that:
[Eg1]  He had a nasty gash that needed medical attention.
[Eg2]  The man that was sitting next to you is a famous actor.
