Impact of COVID19 – Accelerating the Push to Digitization and 5G

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the global economy and in particular on

telecommunications companies has been extensive:
 Network capacities tested to the limits due to dramatic increase in remote working, media streaming,
and video meetings
 While a lot of operators are able to cope with increased traffic, weaknesses in some operators
networks has been exposed
 Telcos’ number-one imperative is to keep their networks, both mobile and fixed, operational
 5G capacity is needed, yet this is in its infancy in terms of deployment worldwide

The pandemic has accelerated the push forward the 5G and digitization plans forward for
many telcos. With 5G, telcos will have the ability to provide faster speed, low latency, and
reliable network that will enable their customers to stay connected wherever they are.
While evolving their 5G plans they need to ensure:
 Customer satisfaction with their current services
 Assist small business customers, with cloud solutions and connectivity to help run their business
efficiently and to ensure business continuity
 Continue to focus on their omnichannel efforts with a fully digital storefront and supply chain, as
customer demand will be met solely through online capabilities for the near term

connected to what matters to them. Hans Schurmans, Director Logistics Operations, Proximus Group

Proximus Group, top Belgian provider of information and communications technology, opens up a world of digital
opportunities so people can live better and work smarter. Because delivering on its mission depends heavily on its
infrastructure, Proximus began efforts to modernize and expand its extensive cable network. But visibility into the
status and location of reels of cable used to build the network was lacking. After the reels were shipped to
contractors, the company didn’t always know where the reels were or how much cable had been consumed. And
contractors often returned reels late, resulting in high inventory costs, late fines, and project delays

Jointly with SAP and implementation partner Ordina, Proximus developed a sensor-based smart application to
track cable reels from warehouse to installation site, resulting in
 A 15% decrease in inventory levels
 Greater inventory and supply efficiency
 Reduced fines for late reel returns
 Accurate documentation of field asset status thanks to the smart application’s integration with the SAP ERP
application and third-party contractor systems
 Improved reporting of loss and damage, increased project quality, and reduced delays
 Optimized cash flow and asset lifecycles, increased top-line revenues
 A custom solution that can be applied to other uses at Proximus and commercialized with external customers

Logical Data Warehouse

Represents a unified data warehouse across different data solutions (EDW, Data Lakes, Object Stores etc.) and provide a
single point of access to all data in the enterprise
Gives users and data scientists the ability to process any data in context and merge data sets from different sources without
necessarily moving the data physically to a single central location, while still providing the governance, lineage and audit
capabilities
Data can be brought together in one of the following ways:
 Data Acquire & Transform using ETL/ELT tools like SAP Data Services, HANA SDI or 3 rd party tools
 Data Tiering to manage where the data is stored based on its value and frequency of use using HANA on-prem and/or HANA Cloud
capabilities. An example of these tiers is – HANA In-memory (Hot), HANA Data Lake (Warm), and ADL/S3 (Cold) with seamless access
across the tiers
 Federation to access the data remotely where it resides when it needs to be processed/queried using SDA or SDI
 Replication to replicate the data from source to a central repository in real-time using SLT, SDI, Data Intelligence
 Streaming to consume and/or process data from sources such as sensors, and still being able to mash it with other data sets
Integration between Enterprise Data and Data Lakes; or IT and OSS/BSS data can be made possible by SAP Data
Intelligence to bring these disparate data types together and process them in context
Metadata across these different datastores and applications, along with data profiling results, is captured in SAP Data
Intelligence where it can be published and catalog for discovery and search

Network Optimization – Predicting Network Issues and Self Healing

Business Challenges
 High levels of interference and low levels of throughput on a telecommunication network
significantly diminish customer experience
 Telecommunication companies need to be able to reroute network traffic to reduce
interference and increase throughput, however this is usually done once thresholds are
already breached
 Require ability to predict Interference and Throughput deterioration in advance with a high
degree of accuracy, to be able to take corrective action like rerouting traffic or network
changes to improve performance of network

Solution
 Predicting interference and throughput for cells in hourly intervals. When the interference
sharply increases or/and throughput drops rapidly, the team can reroute traffic to stabilize the
network
 HANA and SAP Predictive Analytics are used to predict interference and throughput for each
cell 2 hours in advance
 Connected to weather API and using the spatial engine to improve features
 Used Clustering Analysis in SAP Predictive Analytics tells with similar characteristics

Benefits
 Ability to reroute traffic earlier, resulting in no loss of quality for customers
 Significantly improved customer experience and improved understanding of which
variables/triggers cause increase in interference and degradation in throughput back

Blockchain-Based Technology for Blocking Stolen Smartphones

Business Challenges
 Today, IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) of stolen smart phones and IoT-
Devices are kept in databases of the respective Mobile Network Operators (MNO). As
there is no information exchange between MNOs, there is no effective mechanism to
deny mobile network access for stolen devices
 Blocking the use of counterfeit phones. Centralized black lists have proven to be
ineffective. Counterfeit phones are a source of interference and degradation of mobile
networks
 Protecting property of mobile equipment vendors within their supply chain, up to the
point of sale

Solution
 A blockchain based black-list of IMEIs, shared with all MNOs. The blocking of devices
could also be facilitated with this blockchain solution
 Information from the blockchain could be provided as a service to equipment vendors,
end customers or other third parties (e. g. e-commerce platforms, insurances)
 The implementation of this platform requires no modification of mobile phones
Implementation takes place in the cellular network

Benefits
 Mobile operators: improve customer satisfaction and corporate image and create value added services, such as phone insurance
 Phone manufacturers: prevent losses and damage to brand reputation due to counterfeit phones. Protect against theft in the supply chain
