LINEAR EQUATIONS WITH USE OF THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY AND THE
COMBINING OF LIKE TERMS
South Carolina Standards

 8.EEI.7 Extend concepts of linear equations and inequalities in one variable to

more complex multi-step equations and inequalities in real-world and
mathematical situations.
 8.EEI.7a. Solve linear equations and inequalities with rational number coefficients that
include the use of the distributive property, combining like terms, and variables on both
sides. Math Priority and Support Learning Standards September 2020 Page 35
What is the Distributive Property?

 “Distributing” means to share part of something.

In terms of math that means multiplying the
outside into the inside of parentheses.
 If you have A(B+C)= AB+AC. As you
How to use the can see the outside variable A
distributive distributes to both B and C making it
property (with AB+AC. These can not combine
because they don’t have the same
variables) qualities making them like terms.
A(B+C)= AB+AC
Example One: 4(x+2)= 4x+8

6x (x+2)=6x +12x
2 3 2
What are like terms?

LIKE TERMS ARE TERMS THAT HAVE THE SAME QUALITIES,

SUCH AS VARIABLES AND POWERS
How to combine like terms (with variables)

 As said before Like terms have alike qualities. That being

said, a+b are not like terms. But if it was A+A then it would
be the same variable making it 2A. If we have 2x+2x+2y, we
then will have 4x+2y because x and y are not like terms.
