JUDE THE OBSCURE

Jude the Obscure is a novel by Thomas

Hardy, which began as a magazine
serial in December 1894 and was first
published in book form in 1895. It is
Hardy's last completed novel. Its
protagonist, Jude Fawley, is a working-
class young man, a stonemason, who
dreams of becoming a scholar.
1 SUMMARY
Jude Fawley, a poor villager, wants to enter the divinity school at Christminster (the University of
Oxford). Sidetracked by Arabella Donn, an earthy country girl who pretends to be pregnant by him,
Jude marries her, but is later deserted. He earns a living as a stonemason at Christminster; there he falls
in love with his independent-minded cousin, Sue Bridehead. Out of a sense of obligation, Sue marries
the schoolmaster Phillotson, who has helped her. Unable to bear living with Phillotson, she returns to
live with Jude and eventually bears his children out of wedlock. Their poverty and the weight of
society’s disapproval begin to take a toll on Sue and Jude; the climax occurs when Jude’s son by
Arabella hangs Sue and Jude’s children and himself. In penance, Sue returns to Phillotson and the
church. Jude returns to Arabella and eventually dies miserably.

DISCUSSION OF THE
ISSUES
The first issue talking about Jude’s struggle on his study so that he
can get the scholarship to Christminster. Its because he came from
1 the poor family that lives in the village which means he must get
the scholarship to facilitate his study in Christminster.

It implies that he can’t even afford the fee of his study because of
his economic situation, so he chose to study hard for his dream
DISCU scholarship.

S already married. Arabella realized that Jude was a poor man, not his
ideal type of man. That is why she dumped Jude and choose to

2 From this part, we can see that Arabella was a gold digger. She
justified man by his wealth. And Jude got dumped because he’s just
a poor villager.
CONTINUATION
3. The deaths of Jude’s children. His son with Arabella choose to suicide himself and his
siblings (Jude’s kids with Sue) because he thinks that if his parents have fewer children
then they can take care of them well. He always felt that his existement is a burden for
his parents so he choose to hang himself together with his two step-siblings.

We can see that Jude’s son knew that his parents have can’t live well because of his
presence as their son that automatically make them working harder to fulfill their son
needs. It getting worse when he suddenly has two step-siblings coming to his life. Jude’s
son can see that there’s no future for him and his two siblings, that is why they did
suicidal act and end up their lives. It is a sad reality when the children realized that they
had no future because they are in the low class of economy and society life. Also the fact
that his siblings are came from the forbidden relationship (Sue and Jude is cousin by
blood line) that made them get more judgment from society.

CONCLUSIO
N
● The conclusion of the story:
At the end of the day, Jude is keep ended up being alone because of his economic
condition. He couldn’t be able to keep anyone beside him. They dumped him after they
live for a miserable life with Jude. Sue got back to her official and occupied husband
and Sue choose to life with another man, while Jude died pathetically and no one care
about his struggle.

● Conclusion from the issues:

Somehow deals with poverty is a hard times for anyone who live it. They had to make a
living for their live and against the society who always underestimate their existence
just because they are poor.
