Counselling skills
1. Divide the group by threes (triad).
2. Each group will be assigned a case study.
3. Decide who among the triad will be the
mother, counsellor or observer.
Roles
• “Mothers” should give all the information included in
the case study and should answer other questions that
the counsellor may ask outside the case study.

• Counsellor of each triad should ask the “mother”

about her situation and practice assess, analyze and
act steps, listening and learning skills, building
confidence and giving support

• Observer’s task are to record the skills of the

counsellor used and provide feedback after the case
study using the observation checklist.
Demonstration
You are Selena, 19 years old. You have a 3-day old baby girl
named Ariana. You are breastfeeding Ariana because you
were told at the hospital that your breast milk is the best for
Ariana. You also give Ariana water because you were
advised by your mother-in-law to give water during this hot
climate. You also think that your breastmilk is not enough
for her.

For the past three days Ariana has diarrhea and you noticed
that she does not suckle well and has been weak and
inactive. Ariana continuously cries at night and this bothers
you and your young husband, Diether, so much. You
consulted your bestfriend Victoria who referred you to a
peer counsellor. If you were the peer counsellor, what will
you tell Selena?

• Do another round of counselling using case study 2
with the members having different roles
• Another round of counselling using Case study 3
until all members have experienced the three roles

Case Study 1
Ikaw si Bea, 24 years old at housewife. Ang una mong
anak, si Ana, ay 2 days old. Ang asawa mo ay isang
engineer sa isang multinational company. Pinapasuso
mo si Ana dahil alam mong breastmilk is the best para sa
baby mo. Alam mo ito kasi dinalaw ka ng BNS bago ka
manganak. Pagkapanganak sa ospital, tinulungan ka ng
nurse para makapagpasuso sa loob ng unang oras.
Pero nang pag-uwi mo ay napansin mong walang gatas
na lumalabas sa yo. Ang biyenan mo ay gustong bigyan
ng formula si Ana kasi walang tigil ang iyak niya. Hindi
ka sigurado kung ano ang gagawin mo kaya nagtext ka sa
BNS na puntahan ka pero hindi siya pwede pero pinadala
nya ang isang nanay na peer counsellor para dalawin ka. 
Case Study 2

Ikaw si Lagring, 35 year old na housewife. Nagtitinda ka ng

gulay sa palengke na malapit sa bahay ninyo. Ang ika-apat
mong anak na si Daniel, ay 8 months old. Dinadala mo siya sa
palengke. Ang iba mong tatlong anak ay pumapasok na sa
eskwela. Pero dahil abala ka sa pagtitinda, napapasuso mo si
Daniel ng umaga at gabi lang. Sa araw ay pinapadede mo ng
infant formula si Daniel. Minsan may pera kang pambili ng
powdered milk pero kung walang benta ay wala naman
pambili sa ibang araw. Pinapakain mo si Daniel ng ½ tasa ng
lugaw na malabnaw. Minsan dinadagdagan mo ng gulay kapag
mayroong hindi nabenta sa palengke. Napansin mo noong
nakaraang linggo na madalas na umiyak si Daniel. Hindi mo pa
siya dinadala sa health center dahil wala kang oras.
Case Study 3
Ikaw si Mayang, 20-year old single working mother
na nagtratrabaho bilang saleslady sa department
store. Naka-maternity leave ka pa at malapit ka nang
bumalik sa trabaho sa susunod na dalawang linggo.
Eksklusibo mong pinapasuso si Enzo na 1 month old.
Nag-aalala ka na kapag bumalik ka na sa trabaho ay
titigil ka na sa pagpapasuso. Iiwan mo si Enzo sa
nanay mo habang nagtratrabaho ka. Nag-aalala ka
din na hindi sapat ang sweldo mo para bumili ng
formula milk.

mothers in improving their IYCF practices
• Organize IYCF support groups in the community
• Use the Triple A approach – Assess, Analyze, Act
• Peer counsellors improve their skills on listening
and learning skills, building confidence and giving
support through time
