A LOAD OF FILES

LESSON 4
LESSON GOALS
• At the end of the lesson the students must be able to:

1. Describe the three basic types of files

2. Give examples of each type of file
3. Identify the format that can be used for a file
FILES AND FOLDER
• The computer has three
general types of files:
document files, application
files, and system files.
DOCUMENT FILES
We are most familiar with document
files because they are the ones we often
use. Images like family pictures and text
such as your book report are stored in
your computer as document files.

KINDS OF DOCUMENT FILES

Word Document File (Documents)

Audio File (Music)
Graphic File (Picture)
Video File (Movies)
Web Page File (HTML)
APPLICATION FILES
Your computer uses application files or
runs programs that let you work on your
document files. Below are a few of the
commonly used applications or programs.

KINDS OF APPLICATION FILES

Graphic Program (Documents)

Media Player (Music)
Web Browser (Picture)
Word Processor (Movies)
SYSTEM FILES
System files, located in the system
folder, are very important files. Without
them, you cannot operate your computer
properly. Your mouse, printer, or monitor
will not work if there is something wrong
with their system files. You cannot fix
these files on your own; you need an
expert—or you just might do more harm
than good to your computer.
