Introduction
 Established in 1910 as the Imperial Tobacco Company of India Limited, the company
was renamed as the India Tobacco Company Limited in 1970 and later to I.T.C.
Limited in 1974.
 ITC has a diversified presence across industries such
as cigarettes, FMCG, hotels, packaging, paperboards and specialty papers and agribusiness
 The company now stands renamed to ITC Limited, where "ITC" today is no longer
an acronym.
 ITC Limited is an Indian company headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal.
 The company completed 100 years in 2010 and as of 2019–20, had an annual turnover of
US$10.74 billion and a market capitalization of US$35 billion.
 The company has a total of 13 businesses in 5 segments. Also there are 90 countries where
ITC exports its products. Its products are available in 6 million retail outlets.
 Sanjiv Puri (59), is the Chairman & Managing Director of ITC Limited.
Background & Major issues
 It started off as the Imperial Tobacco Company (1910) as British owned
company, leader in single cigarette industry for decades ( THE SCISSORS
COMPANY)
 After Indian independence the Government policies of increasing excise duty
on tobacco products etc. severely affected their market and profit, and
increase in regulatory pressure on foreign ownership.
 Illegal cigarette trade began which lead to damage to the company and
potentially destroying the country’s social fabric.

Major Comeback
 The company was converted into a Public Limited Company on 27 October
1954. The first step towards Indianization was taken in the same year with
6% of the Indian shareholding of the company.
 Hotel Industry (1975), Paperboards(1977), Agri business as well as to
developing FMCG space such as Cigarettes, Branded Foods, Personal care
etc.
 The shareholding went over 60% in 1976 and more hotels were started by the
company in the following years.

 ITC has also expanded its FMCG portfolio to include items of daily
consumption relevant to rural markets in a manner that leverages in-house
capabilities. (includes safety matches, iodized salt, agarbattis)

from just a cigarette company, and making it an

Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate social responsibility is a form of
international private business self-
regulation which aims to contribute to
societal goals of a philanthropic, activist,
or charitable nature by engaging in or
supporting volunteering or ethically-
oriented practices.
CSR Expenditure Plan
 CSR expenditure includes all direct and indirect expenses incurred towards
ITC corporate social responsibility programmers.
 surplus arising from any CSR program shall again be redirected towards
CSR. Accordingly, any income from ITC CSR projects will be netted off from
the CSR expenditure and that amount will be reported as corporate social
responsibility expenditure.
 Every year, the CSR and Sustainability Committee will present a strategic
CSR Plan delineating the projects to be taken up during the year and the
specified budgets thereof, for the Board’s approval. The Board will mull over
and then approve the CSR Plan with the necessary modifications.
