THE GLOBAL MARITIME DISTRESS AND

SAFETY SYSTEM
GMDSS
 GMDSS di bagi atas 4 area,
A1. Coastal area tercakup dengan VHF
statiun pantai dengan sistem signal baru
DIGITAL SELECTED CALL(DSC).
A2. Sea area tercakup dengan MF/HF stasiun
pantai dengan DSC.
A3. Sea area tercakup dengan sistim Imarsat
geostationary satelit.
GMDSS
A4. Semua area tidak termasuk A1, A2, A3,
(Polar area utara 70° N dan selatan 70°S
Jarak imarsat membentang sampai 5° ).

Alerting, Apabila tanda berita di pancarkan ke

DSC
Introduction.
Procedure for DSC communication on VHF and MF
are described .

The procedure for DSC communication on VHF

are in general the same as for MF and VHF .
Special condition to be taken to be account when
transmitting the DSC communication on HF are
described .
Q and A
 Which is distress communication in GMDSS .

 Which the channel is used for DSC alerting on

the MF band .

* Which frequency is used for DSC alerting on the

MF band .
DISTRESS

 Tranmission of DSC distress alert.

A distress alert be transmitted when, in
opinion of the MASTER on the ship or a
person
or person on it.
Is in distress and requiring immediate
assistance.
DISTRESS

 Whenever possible, a distress alert should

including the ships last known position
and the time (UTC) when it was valid.
 The position and the time may be include
automatically by the ships navigational
equipments or may be inserted manually.
DSC DISTRESS ALERT
 Tune the transmitter DSC distress channel
2187.5khz or or MF channel 70 on VHF.

 Time printing, type or select for DSC

equipments keyboard.
1. The nature of distress.
2. The ship last known position L/L).
3. The time in UTC when the position was valid.
4. Type of subsequent distress communication
by telephony once with DSC equipments.
DSC DISTRESS ALERT
 Transmit the DSC distress alert.

 Prepare for the subsequent distress traffic by

transmitter and the radio telephony receiver to
the distress traffic channel on the same
waveband.
contoh, 2182khz on MF, channel 16 for VHF,
while waiting for the DSC distress
acknowledgement .
DCS DISTRESS ALERT
 Acknowledgement a DSC distress alert.
Ship receiving a DSC distress alert for another
ship should defer acknowledgement of the
distress alert for a short interval when the ship
located within an area covered by one or more
coastal station.

This is to give the coast station time to

acknowledge the DSC distress alert first.
Q and A
 Which areas are covered by HF coast station in
GMDSS .

 You are to call a harbour station on VHF, which

channel must be used.

 Give a short definition of alerting within

GMDSS.
DSC DISTRESS ALERT
 Ship receiving DSC distress alert from another
ship shall,
* Prepare to receive the subsequent distress
communication by tuning the radio
telephony receiver to distress
traffic frequency on same band that the
DSC distress alert was received 2182 for
MF and channel 16 on VHF.
DSC DISTRESS ALERT

* Acknowledge receive od the distress alert by

transmitting by following the radio telephony
on the distress traffic frequency of same
band that the DSC distress alert was
received 2182khz on MF and channel 16 for
VHF
DISTRESS ALERT
– MAYDAY
– the 9 digit identify of the ship in distress,
reported 3 time.
– this is.
– the 9 digit identify of the call sign or or ather
identification of own ship reported 3 time.
– RECEIVE MYDAY
DISTRESS ALERT
 Acknowledgement of the DSC distress alert by
the DSC normally only made by coast station.
 Only in cases where no other station seems to
have received the DSC distress alert, and the
transmission of DSC distress alert by using
DSC to terminate the call.
 The ship should then inform a coast staion or
coast earth station by any praticable means.
DISTRESS TRAFFIC
 On receive of a DSC distress acknowledgement a ship in
should comment the distress traffic by radiotelephony on the
distress traffic frequency 2162khz on MF, channel 16 for VHF.
 Contoh,
– MAYDAY
– this is, 9 digit identify and call sign or other I
identification of the ship.
– the ship position if not included in DSC distress alert
– the nature of distress and assistance required.
– any other information which might facilitate the
reason
DISTRESS RELAY

 Ship knowing that another vessel is in distress

shsll transmit a DSC distress relay alert if,
– Ship in distress not itself able to transmit
distress alert.
– Master of the ship considers that further help
is necessary.
Q and A
 Give example of acknowledgement of receipt of
a distress massage.

 What is the urgency signal on radio telephony.

 What is the safety signal on radiotelephony.

DSC DISTRESS ALERT
 Tune the transmitter to the DSC distress
channel 2187.5khz on MF, channel 70 on VHF.

 Select the distress relay call format on the DSC

equipments.

 Type in or select from the DSC equipments

keyboard.
DISTRESS RELAY
– All ship call or 9 digit identify of the appropriate
coast station.
– The 8 digit identify of the ship in distress, if
shown.
– The time in UTC when the position was failed
( if telephony ).
* Transmit the DSC distress relay call.
DISTRESS RELAY ALERT

 Received from a coast station

After having received and acknowledged a
DSC distress alert, coast station will normally
retransmit the information received from a DSC
distress alert relay call, addressed to all ship, all
ship, all ship on specific geographical area, a
group of ship, or a specific ship.
DISTRESS RELAY ALERT

 Ship receiving distress relay call

transmitted by a coast station should
acknowledge the receive the call by
radiotelephony an the distress traffic
channel on the same waveband on which
the relay call was received on 2182khz for
MF and channel 16 for VHF.
Contoh
 Acknowledge transmitted.

– MAYDAY
– 9 digit identify or call sign or other
identification of the calling coast station.
– this is 9 digit identify, call sign or other
identification of own ship
– RECEIVED MAYDAY
