Heat Treatment of Steels

Heat Treatment Stress

Relieving
 Temperature… 550 - 650 C.
 Cooling… air cooled.

 Result…used to relax welding

stresses without affecting the

metallurgical structure.
Heat Treatment Annealing
 Temperature…above 910 C.
 Cooling… air cooled.

 Result…increases ductility.

decreases toughness makes.

bending easier lowers yield
stress.
Heat Treatment
Normalising
 Temperature…above 910 C.
 Cooling… air cooled.

 Result…Normalising is used to

modify and refine grain

structures also relieving stress.
Heat Treatment Hardening &
Quenching
 Temperature… various
 Cooling… oil or water.

 Result…after quenching the

steel is highly stressed,very hard

,brittle and is prone to cracking
therefore requires tempering.
Heat Treatment Tempering
 Temperature… 200 – 650 C
 Cooling… air cooled.

 Result…after quenching the

metal is slowly heated up to

produce the required tensile
strength and toughness
properties .
