Finding the
Greatest
Common
Factor (GCF) of
Two Numbers
Learning Targets
A. I can determine the common factors of
two numbers.

B. I can find the common factors and the

greatest common factor (GCF) of two
numbers using the following methods:
listing, prime factorization, and
continuous division. M4NS-IIc68.1

C. I can solve real-life problems involving

the GCF of two numbers. M4NS-IId70.1

Activity 1
“Bingo Factor”

8
Guide Questions:
1. Which numbers are
marked red? Blue?
2. Are there any numbers
marked with both red and
blue? Which numbers are
those?
3. Among the numbers
marked both red and blue,
which among them is the
highest? What is its
connection with the
numbers 20 and 50?
Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
the biggest number that can divide two given numbers evenly;
the largest factor of both of the given numbers

Example:

The common factors of 18 and 24 are 1, 2, 3, and 6.

The largest among the four common factors is 6.

Thus, the GCF of 18 and 24 is 6.

12
Listing Method
this method is done by listing all the factors of the two numbers and
identifying the highest number among the common factors

Example: Find the GCF of 18 and 24.

Step 1: List the factors of the given numbers.

Factors of 18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18

Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

Step 2: Identify the greatest among the common factors.

Thus, the GCF of 18 and 24 is 6.

Prime Factorization
this method is done by listing the numbers as a product
prime factors, bringing down the common factors, and
multiplying the common factors

Example: Find the GCF of 18 and 24.

Step 1: Express both numbers as product of their

prime factors. Arrange the factors such that the
common factors are aligned.
Prime Factorization
this method is done by listing the numbers as a product
prime factors, bringing down the common factors, and
multiplying the common factors

tep 2: Bring down the common factors and multiply.

Thus, the GCF of 18 and 24 is 6.

Continuous Division
this method is done by continuously dividing the two
numbers using a common factor, and multiplying
the common factors used

Example: Find the GCF of 18 and 24.

Step 1: Divide both numbers by a common factor.

Write the common factor on the left side of the given
numbers. Write the quotients below the numbers.
Continuous Division
this method is done by continuously dividing the two
numbers using a common factor, and multiplying
the common factors used

Example: Find the GCF of 18 and 24.

Step 2: Repeat Step 1 until the remaining numbers no longer

have any common factor.
Continuous Division
this method is done by continuously dividing the two
numbers using a common factor, and multiplying
the common factors used

Example: Find the GCF of 18 and 24.

Step 3: Multiply the common factors used.

GCF:
Thus, the greatest common factor (GCF) of 18 and 24 is 6.
