sheet of gold, and the ivory teeth
were riveted to it. The lower
denture consists of a single carved
block of ivory. The two dentures
were held together by steel

The Hebrews

Shown here are front and back views of a mandibular fixed bridge –
four natural human incisor teeth and two carved ivory teeth bound
with gold wire – found in Sidon, chief city of ancient Phoenicia. The
prosthesis dates between the fifth and the fourth centuries B.C.
Musee du Louvre, Paris.
Giuseppangelo Fonzi, an Italian
dentist with a fashionable Parisian
Practice, invented the individual
porcelain teeth that revolutionized
the construction of dentures in the
early nineteenth century. In this
partial upper denture of about
1830, porcelain teeth of Fonzis
design have beens oldered to a gold
backing. The denture was retained
by wires surroundign the natural
lower teeth. Medicinsk-Historisk

Healthy Gums grip the

sides of the teeth

and anchor them

firmly in place.
Unremoved plaque hardens

into calculus or tartar,

which presses on the gums,

causing inflammation and

bleeding. This is known as

Gingivitis
If untreated, pus forms,

the bone gets eroded

and finally the tooth

may fall out. This condition

is called Periodontitis or
Pyorrhea
Acids attack and wear

away tooth enamel thus

creating a cavity

When the decay spreads to the

root it causes an abscess. Only

root canal treatment can then

save the tooth. In advanced cases

the tooth may have to be

extracted.
An ideal restorative material would be:
1. Biocompatible

2. Bond permanently to tooth structure or bone

3. Match the natural appearance of tooth structure and

other visible

4. Exhibit properties similar to those of tooth enamel,

dentin, and other tissues.

5. Be capable of initiating tissue repair or regeneration

of missing or damaged tissues.
