Simile
• Is a figure of speech in which two things that
are not obviously like each other are
compared to make a description more vivid.
• A simile will often begin with a phrase
introduced by like or as
Metaphor
• In a metaphor two dissimiliar things are
compared but rather than saying one is like
the other, a metaphor goes a stage further
and makes one thing become another.
Personification
• is attributing human characteristics to
nonhuman things.
Onomatopoeia
• is the use of descriptive words that sound or
mimic the noise they are describing.
Oxymoron
• is a description using two opposite ideas to
create an effective description.
Hyperbole
• is an over-exaggeration used to emphasize an
emotion or description
Litotes
• Litotes are figures of speech that use
understatement to make a point.
