Tea in the United Kingdom

• Since the 18th century the United Kingdom has been one of the largest per capita tea
consumer in the world, with each citizen consuming on average 1.9 kg per year. The
popularity of tea occasioned the furtive export of slips, a small shoot for planting or twig
for grafting to tea plants, from China to British India and its commercial culture there,
beginning in 1840; British interests controlled tea production in the subcontinent. Tea,
which was an upper-class drink in Europe, became the infusion of every class in Great
Britain in the course of the 18th century and has remained so.
• As tea spread throughout the United Kingdom in the 19th century, people started to lay
out tea gardens and hold tea dances. The tea gardens lost value[clarification needed] after
World War II but tea dances are still held today in the United Kingdom.[citation needed]
• In Britain tea is usually black tea served with milk (never cream; the cream of a "cream
tea" is clotted cream served on scones, usually with strawberry jam, a tradition originating
from Devon and Cornwall). Strong tea served with milk and occasionally one or two (or
more in some cases) teaspoons of sugar, usually in a mug, is commonly referred to as
builder's tea. Much of the time in the United Kingdom, tea drinking is not the delicate,
refined cultural expression that some might imagine: a cup (or commonly a mug) of tea is
something drunk often, with some people drinking six or more cups of tea a day.
Employers generally allow breaks for tea.

• Sourced from the finest tea gardens in the world, Lipton Black tea is expertly
blended to give you the famous Lipton taste. It is also a rich natural source of
flavonoids.
This is important because a heart healthy diet typically contains flavonoid rich
foods such as fruits, vegetables and tea. Studies have also shown drinking 3 cups
of tea per day helps to maintain healthy vascular function. Black tea has also
been shown to improve concentration and alertness due to its naturally occurring
caffeine and theanine.
Black and green tea is from the same plant, Camellia sinensis and both are
associated with health benefits. The overall flavonoid level in each type of tea is
similar however the types of flavonoids differ. Black tea contains tea flavonoids
theaflavins and thearubigins, whereas Green tea is rich in catechins .
At Lipton we care about the tea that goes into your cup. We care about the bush
that grows it, the soil and water that nourishes it, and the environment that
sustains it. But above all, we care about the people that make it all happen. Lipton
Quality Black Tea comes from fully Rainforest Alliance certified farms. Lipton Black
Tea is also available in 200’s and 50’s New Foil Fresh packs.
