GIUSEPPE MAZZINI

 He was born in Genoa on June 1807 in a


middle class family. He died on 10th march
1872.

 He was an Italian politician, journalist,


and nationalist for the unification of italy.
a patriot, political activist, writer, lawyer
and founder of young Italy and played
very important role in liberal nationalism
who strived to found a unified democratic
republic of Italy. 

 He was one of the three revolutionaries


who made a significant contribution in
Italian unification.
Mazzini showed good learning qualities as
well as interest in politics and literature.
 In 1827, Mazzini travelled to Tuscany, where
he became a member of the Carbonari, a
secret association with political purposes.

 On 31 October of that year, he was arrested at


Genoa and interned at Savona.
He founded underground societies like
Young Italy in Marseilles, and Young
Europe in Berne.
 In early 1831, he was released from
prison, but confined to a small hamlet.

 He chose exile instead, moving to Geneva


 in Switzerland.

 His intention was nothing less than to


overturn the European settlement agreed
in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna, which
had reestablished.
 On 7 April 1848, The 
First Italian War of Indepen
dence
, started by the Piedmontese
king Charles Albert, turned
into a total failure. Mazzini,
who had never been popular
in the city because he wanted
Lombardy to become a
republic instead of joining
Piedmont.
 His contributions are:
1)For a unitary Italian republic, Giuseppe
Mazzini put together different programs.
He subsequently founded underground
societies in Marseilles such as ‘Young Italy’
and ‘Young Europe’ in Berne. ‘Young Italy’
was a secret society founded to facilitate the
unification of Italy: “One free, independent,
republican country.”
2)Mazzini predicted that a common rebellion
would establish a unified Italy and set off a
revolutionary wave across Europe.
