PREDICTION
A prediction, or forecast, is a statement
about a future event. They are often,
but not always, based upon experience
or knowledge. Prediction is an
estimation made from observations.

For example: If increasing fertilizer

increases number of beans, then coffee
bean plants treated with more fertilizer
will have more beans.
WHAT IS PREDICTION?

So, this can be as simple as asking the

question,

‘What do you think is going to happen next?’,

quickly followed with, ‘Why?’.

However, we need to make explicit the

additional skills needed to be able to do this.

To be able to predict, you need to be able to :-

 Read and understand what has happened,

and is currently happening,
 You need to be able to retrieve and infer (‘details stated
and implied’).
 Combine this (details) with your knowledge of the world.
 Weigh up probability.
 and make a sensible prediction of the next outcome.

It might come naturally to many, but it’s worth breaking it

down to look at what’s involved.
For example:
(prediction statements.)

“Watch out! You’re going to hit that car

in front.”

“It’s going to be a lovely day today – not

a cloud in the sky.”
CONVERSATION

Example A:
* A: I am planning on buying a house
next year. What do you think about
that?

* B:There is going to be a rise in

house prices next year.
Speaking tip: We also use will to talk about intentions and strong decision.
……………………Going to  sounds more objective.
Example B:

A: Hey what do you predict is going to happen in this

election?
B: XYZ party isn’t going to win the election.
A:Why do you say that?
B: Their propaganda and campaigning wasn’t clear this
year.
“He isn’t going to win ” doesn’t have this negative implication. It sounds more like a prediction and a simple, objective fact- perhaps he
isn’t going to win .
EXAMPLE C:
• Atharv : Hey Dipansh! How are you?
• Dipansh: I am doing great! thank you.
• Atharv : You seem very pleasant about something. What
is it?
• Dipansh : Yeah! I'm eagerly waiting for my Civil service
exam results.
• Atharv : Is that so? Do you think you are going to get
selected?
• Dipansh : Yes, I am positive that I am going to get
selected.
