CATHOLICISM

(PAPACY)
Today, we will have a sidetrack
from our series and will take you to
the teaching about the Catholicism
and to have a better understanding
of what they teach that is contrary
to the word of God.
I just want to warn some of us that
this topic is somehow offensive to
many, but nothing is more loving
than to tell people the truth.
Are Catholics our brothers and sisters? Do
we worship the same God and believe the
same gospel as we do?
Let us enumerate the major issues of
Catholicism, The Pope, Worship of Mary,
Worship of Saints, Purgatory, The Bible, The
Gospel, The Church, The Veneration.
1.THE POPE
• POPE MEANS FATHER, THE
SUPREME PONTIFF ALSO
CALLED AS HOLY FATHER

9 Do not call anyone on earth your

father; for One is your Father, He who
is in heaven. (Matt 23:9)
• CHIEF PASTOR OF THE
WORLDWIDE CATHOLIC
CHURCH

4 And when the Chief Shepherd

appears, you will receive the unfading
crown of glory. (1 Pet 5:4)
• APOSTOLIC SUCCESSOR TO SAINT
PETER

18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock
I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not
overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of
heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been
bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall
have been loosed in heaven.” (Matt 16:18-19 )
You are Peter (Petros, stone or
rock) and upon this rock (Petras,
Bedrock or Big rock) I will build
my Church. Jesus build His
Church not on Peter but in Him.
11 For NO MAN can lay a foundation other than THE
ONE WHICH IS LAID, WHICH IS JESUS CHRIST. (1
Cor 3:11)

6 For this is contained in Scripture:

“Behold, I lay in Zion a CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS
CORNERSTONE,
And HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM will not be
disappointed.” (1 Pet 2:6)
The keys of the kingdom are nothing more than a
church discipline and it is not only given to Peter but to
all his disciples and believers who can affirm and
exercise Church discipline.
(Matt18:18)
According to them (the Catholics) Jesus is the King and
Peter was appointed as prime minister (Pope is a
successor of Peter) So, whenever the King was away, the
prime minister has the authority of the King. Peter is in
charge when Christ is gone.
A.PAPAL SUPREMACY
Is Peter become the head of
the Church in Rome? Does
the Bible states Peter as the
Head or Prime Minister?
Acts 1, Peter took the lead on selecting who will replace Judas
Acts 2, Peter stood up to make the first Sermon
Acts 3, Peter 2nd Sermon
Acts 4, Peter and John imprisonment and release
Acts 5, Peter confronted Ananias and Sapphira
Acts 8, Peter confronted the sorcerer
Acts 9, Peter’s ministry in Joppa
Acts 10, God affirms to peter that salvation is also for the
Gentiles
Acts 11, Peter reports at Jerusalem
Acts 12, Peter was arrested and released
Acts 15, Peter stood up when there was so much debate
Peter was not mentioned as the head of the
Church though he was leading the apostle in
Acts, never mentioned that he builds the
church in Rome, never exercised lording over
the Church.
Who is Peter according to Paul and to Peter
himself?
Peter, an APOSTLE OF JESUS CHRIST
(1 Peter 1)

Simon Peter, A BOND-SERVANT AND

APOSTLE OF JESUS CHRIST
(2 Peter 1)
5 Therefore, I EXHORT THE ELDERS AMONG YOU,
AS YOUR FELLOW ELDER and witness of the
sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that
is to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God among you,
exercising oversight not under compulsion, but
voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for
sordid gain, but with eagerness; 3 NOR YET AS
LORDING IT OVER THOSE ALLOTTED TO YOUR
CHARGE, BUT PROVING TO BE EXAMPLES TO
THE FLOCK.
(1 Peter 5:1-3)
PETER NEVER
CALLED HIMSELF A
POPE, A HOLY
FATHER, A SUPREME
PONTIFF OR VICAR
OF CHRIST
21 So then let NO ONE BOAST IN MEN.
For all things belong to you, 22 whether
Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or
life or death or things present or things to
come; all things belong to you, 23 AND
YOU BELONG TO CHRIST; AND CHRIST
BELONGS TO GOD.
(1 Cor 3:21-23)
The Bible has no mention of Pope, no
mention of Peter as prime minister, no
mention of Peter as the first Pope or build
the church in Rome and Jesus never
established Papacy. Then who is Peter
according to Jesus?
32 but I have prayed for you, that your
faith may not fail; and you, when once
you have turned again, strengthen your
BROTHERS. (Luke 22:32)
Then who is the Head of
the Church? Who is the
Rock, the Chief
Cornerstone?
22 And He put all things in subjection under
His feet, and GAVE HIM AS HEAD OVER
ALL THINGS TO THE CHURCH, 23
WHICH IS HIS BODY, the fullness of Him
who fills all in all. (Eph 1:22-23)
as CHRIST also is the
HEAD OF THE
CHURCH
(Eph 5:23b)
The Pope takes every title that God the
Father, Son and Holy Spirit owns, “The
Holy Father, the Head of the Church and
the Vicar of Christ (which means “in the
person of”).
B. PAPAL INFALLIBILITY
Papal infallibility is a dogma of the Catholic
Church which states that, in virtue of the
promise of Jesus to Peter, the pope when
appealing to his highest authority is preserved
from the possibility of error on doctrine
"initially given to the apostolic Church and
handed down in Scripture and tradition".
Infallibility refers to an inability to be wrong.

Is Pope infallible? Is Pope makes no wrong

in his doctrine, teachings, words and action?
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face,
because he stood condemned. 12 For prior to the coming of
certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but
when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof,
fearing the party of the circumcision. 13 The rest of the Jews
joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was
carried away by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they
were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to
Cephas in the presence of all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the
Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the
Gentiles to live like Jews? (Galatians 2:11-14)
75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said,
“Before a rooster crows, YOU WILL DENY ME THREE
TIMES.” And he went out and wept bitterly. (Matt 26:75)

23 But He turned and said to Peter, “GET BEHIND ME,

SATAN! YOU ARE A STUMBLING BLOCK TO ME; for
you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but
man’s.”
(Matthew 16:23)
God and His words are the only
infallible. Verses and chapters in Psalms
clearly state that God’s word is pure and
trustworthy.

The Pope owns that title that belongs to

God and His words.
C. PRIEST AS MEDIATOR
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with
you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on
them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have
been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any,
they have been retained.” (John 20:21-23)
According to the catholic priests, they have the
authority to forgive sins because Jesus gave them
that authority in John chapter 20. They also state
that as God uses everyone of us when He gives the
gift of the Holy Spirit to minister to others and so
God uses the priest to minister to the people to
forgive sins. But what did Jesus really mean in
John 20:23?
Only God can forgive sins, Jesus is God that’s why
he can forgive sins, but John 20 doesn’t talk about
the disciples to be equaled with God. So how can
we interpret it? In able to interpret it, we will see
the apostle’s ministry in the book of Acts onwards.
They share the Gospel
of Christ, that every
person who repented
and believe Jesus will
be forgiven by God.
Acts 3:19
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that He will forgive your sins.

Acts 2:38
Peter said to them, “Each one of you must turn away from your sins
and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will
be forgiven; and you will receive God’s gift, the Holy Spirit.

Acts 11:18
When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised
God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance
that leads to life.”
There is no single story in the Bible of
confession room, or believers confessing
their sins to Priest.
It clearly states that John 20 talks
about the commission of the Apostle’s
to proclaim the Gospel and it includes
repentance of sins.
16 Therefore, CONFESS YOUR SINS
TO ONE ANOTHER, and pray for one
another so that you may be healed. The
effective prayer of a righteous man can
accomplish much. (James 5:16)
And confessing sins to one another is commanded
so that we can pray for each other’s struggle.

None of the Apostles or disciples do exercise that of

what the priest does.
5 For there is one God, and ONE
MEDIATOR also between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself
as a ransom for all, the testimony given at
the proper time. (1 Timothy 2:5-6)
So, the Pope and the Priest take that
authority of God to forgive sins and the
place of Christ as mediator.
CONCLUSION
• Why do we study this? Because this is
important. Majority of the Filipinos and
even our loved ones are Catholics and the
like, and this religion is far different from
what Christ has established, far different
on how the apostles lived and far from the
truth of God’s word. It has a different
leadership, a different belief, a different
authority.
• Only God can forgive sins, and His words
are infallible and He is the supreme
authority, not the Pope or the Priest or any
other church leader.
• That’s why as Christian, we should know
that there is only one Holy Father and that
is God, there’s only one Head of the
Church and that is Christ and there is only
one Vicar of Christ and that is the Holy
Spirit which Christ has promised to be with
us.
