DRILLING ENGINEERING I

PRESSURES
HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE
It is exerted by a fluid at equilibrium at a given point within the
fluid.
PROBLEMS
1. What is the percentage decrease in air pressure as you move
from ground level to the top of the physics department, which is
50m tall. Patmospheric is 100 kPa at the ground level. The
density of the air is approximately 1.3 kg per cubic meters.
2. Using a constant volumen gas thermometer requires you to
determine the absolute pressure of the gas on the thermometer
(shown in the diagram). The Liquid in the tube has a density of
13.534 kg per cubic meter and the height is 10 cm. The
atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kPa.
PROBLEMS
3. A bottle is partially filled with wine as depicted in the diagram
below. If the gauge pressure at the liquid Surface is -3000 Pa, what
is the gauge pressure 0.2 m below the surface. Assume the liquid has
a specific gravity of 1.
