Adonis &Aprhodite
SLIDESMANIA

ORTILANO, LYKA MAE F.

ADONIS
Adonis was a handsome
young and an Aphrodite's lover.
His father was the King Cinyrus
of Cyprus and his mother was
Princess Myrrha(or Smyrna),the
SLIDESMANIA

daughter of the King.

APHRODITE
Aphrodite was a female character
born in Cyprus. Well not exactly born
because as the story goes she was
emerged from the foams of the sea at a
certain place called Petra tou
Romiou(a rock).She was a beautiful
woman and that’s why she was also
SLIDESMANIA

called “Goddess of love and beauty’’,

“Cypria” and “Cypriate”.
● The myth of Aphrodite and Adonis is
one of the most popular Greek myths,
since it is directly associated with love
and Eros. Not even Gods and deities
could escape the powerful arrows of God
Eros and fell in love with mortals with
catastrophic results.
● Aphrodite and Adonis is a classic myth
about lust and rejection, enhanced with
several spicy details about the Goddess of
SLIDESMANIA

Love and Lust and the beautiful mortal

Adonis.
Adonis And Aphrodite: A Myth About
Beauty And Love
● The first myth of Aphrodite and Adonis involves the man’s
parents and is a story about beauty, love and jealousy. Adonis’
mother was the beautiful Myrrha or Smyrna and his father, King
Cinyrus of Cyprus, who was actually the father of Myrrha.
● This strange parentage of Adonis came about because Goddess
Aphrodite was jealous of Myrrha’s beauty and caused the girl to
unite with her own father.
● When Cinyrus found out that he had been tricked, he chased
Myrrha with a sword, intending to kill both her and her unborn
child. Aphrodite, repenting of her deed, quickly turned the girl
into a myrrh tree.

According to myth

The myth of Aphrodite and Adonis is

one of the most popular myths. This
myth is a classic myth about beauty and
love. There are two versions of these
myth. The first version refers to Adonis
early years and the second to Adonis
death and the Aphrodite's role in it.
SLIDESMANIA
First version
The first version involves Adonis
parents and is a story of love, beauty
and jealousy. As I said before Adonis’s
mother was the beautiful princess
Smyrna and his dad the King Cinyrus,
who was actually Smyrna's father. This
strange parentage of Adonis came
because Aphrodite was jealous of
SLIDESMANIA

Smyrna's beauty so and caused the girl

to unite with her own father.
Second Version
In the other version of the myth of Aphrodite and Adonis, when Ares, the God of
War and Aphrodite’s husband, hears that Aphrodite loves the youth Adonis, got
really jealous and decided to take revenge.
Aphrodite was chasing Adonis to mate with him, but Adonis was more
interested in hunting. Then Aphrodite begged Adonis to give up the dangerous
sports he enjoyed because she could not bear to lose him, knowing that the young
man would have a terrible end, but Adonis ignored her advice and was killed while
hunting by a wild boar, that was actually God Ares.
When Adonis died, Aphrodite heard his cries and hastened to his side in her
swan-drawn chariot. She cursed the Fates and Ares that had ordained his death.
With Adonis still in her hag, Aphrodite turned the blood drops that fell from his
wounds onto the soil into windflowers as a memorial to their love.
Anemones sprung from the blood of Adonis and his spirit returned to the
underworld. In response to the tearful goddess, Zeus determined that Adonis should
SLIDESMANIA

stay just for the half of the year in the Underworld. After his death and resurrection,
he was worshiped as the God of grain crops.
The Death And Resurrection Of
Adonis In Greek Mythology
● According to scholars, the death
and resurrection of Adonis
represents the decay and revival of
the plant year. He was worshiped as
a corn god, a god of grain crops,
which were very  more important to
the ancient inhabitants of Greece
SLIDESMANIA

and other Mediterranean lands.

SLIDESMANIA
The story of how
Medusa was killed by
Perseus is one of the most
thrilling stories in Greek
mythology. Perseus was
born to the god, Zeus, and
mortal woman, Danae,
making him a demi-god
with great strength and
intelligent ingenuity. He
would become one of the
great heroes in Greek
mythology because of his
SLIDESMANIA

ability to behead the

monster, Medusa.
The Early Years of Perseus

Perseus was born to Zeus and Danae. Danae was the

daughter of King Acrisius. When Perseus was born, King
Acrisius feared that Perseus would grow up and kill him,
so he cast Danae and Perseus into the sea in a wooden
chest.
The chest came ashore on the island of Serifos, where a
fisherman found them and took them in. The fisherman
was the brother of King Polydectes, who was a malicious
king. Perseus would grow into a strong young man with
SLIDESMANIA

great power and intelligence.

King Polydectes Falls
in Love
King Polydectes had fallen in love with
Danae and made her his slave. Perseus wanted
to protect his mother, and Polydectes knew
Perseus would protect her at all costs. Some
versions of the myth describe Polydectes as
requiring Perseus to bring him a gift, while
other versions of the myth send Perseus on a
dangerous quest to keep him from
overpowering the king.
While the versions are different, they have
SLIDESMANIA

the same outcome; Perseus is ordered by King

Polydectes to bring back the head of Medusa.
The Gorgon Medusa
Medusa was born a beautiful mortal
woman with long flowing hair. Medusa
was a temptress among the gods, and
Poseidon had impregnated the mortal
while in the temple of Athena. Athena
cursed the mortal Medusa with a
hideous face and snakes for hair.
Medusa would be confined to a cave,
and anyone who made eye contact with
the Gorgon would be turned to stone.
SLIDESMANIA
Perseus Receives Gifts from the
Gods

Perseus, who was the son of Zeus, had help

from the gods on his quest to find and behead
Medusa. Hades, god of the underworld, gave
Perseus the cap of invisibility. Hermes, god of
travel, gave Perseus a pair of winged sandals.
Athena, god of women, gave Perseus a reflective
bronze shield, and Hephaestus, god of fire and the
forge, gave Perseus a sword.
SLIDESMANIA
Perseus Finds and Beheads Medusa
Using the gifts from the gods, Perseus locates and
enters Medusa’s cave. Perseus finds Medusa asleep
inside her cave and makes sure not to wake her. Perseus
takes the reflective bronze shield from Athena and
holds it up to use as a mirror to locate Medusa. Walking
backward towards Medusa, Perseus continues to hold
the shield in the air to keep a clear view of Medusa,
making sure to only look at Medusa in the shield.
As Perseus crept closer to Medusa, he wielded the
sword that Hephaestus had given him and beheaded the
monster. As Medusa was beheaded, she birthed Pegasus
and Chrysaor from her neck, who were Poseidon’s
SLIDESMANIA

children. Perseus threw Medusa’s head into his satchel

and journeyed home.
Perseus Uses Medusa’s Head as a
Weapon
On his way home, Perseus came upon
Andromeda, a beautiful woman embedded into a
rock on the shore. The Cetus was a sea monster in
the water below that was imminent to eat
Andromeda. Perseus slew the monster and rescued
Andromeda from the rock.
Perseus desired to marry Andromeda, who had
been promised to marry Phineus. As Perseus and
Andromeda were to be married, Phineus attempted
to fight Perseus. Perseus used the head of Medusa to
turn Phineus into stone. Perseus and Andromeda
returned to see King Polydectes and set his mother
free. Perseus used the head of Medusa to turn
SLIDESMANIA

Polydectes into stone.

Moral of the story
The story of Perseus and Medusa is told to
teach various life lessons. Perseus is cast out
into the sea in a wooden chest with his
unfaithful mother, yet they survive the rough
seas by praying to Poseidon for the seas to be
calm. After landing on the island of Serifos,
Perseus grew into a strong man with noble
character and great intelligence. King
Polydectes ordered that Perseus bring him the
head of Medusa, and Perseus dedicated
SLIDESMANIA

himself to fulfilling the demand to save his

mother.
