AFUSING BATU: THE

LUDONG HAVEN OF
ALCALA

BACKGROUND
 Afusing Batu is a barangay in the municipality of Alcala, in the province
of Cagayan. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 383. This
represented 0.93% of the total population of Alcala.
 This place is an island. It shares with common boarders with the following
barangays, Damurog, Abbeg, Afusing Daga (Alcala) and various barangays in the
neighbor town (Amulung), Gabut, Masical and Pacac Pequeno.
 Being surrounded by the Cagayan River, the main source of living of the people in
this place is farming and fishing. The people grow crops like corn, peanuts, and
vegetables which they harvest twice a year and store it as for food consumption and
others trade it in the nearby municipalities.
LUDONG
 The lobed river mullet (Cestraeus plicatilis), also
known as ludong or banak, is a freshwater mullet.
 It is claimed to be endemic to Cagayan River and
tributaries extending through the watersheds of
Cagayan Valley and the Santa-Abra River Systems
of Ilocos Sur and Abra.
 Ludong is herbivorous, eating only the filamentous
algae that live on rocks and boulders in and near
river rapids.
 A mature fish weighs from 0.25 kg to 2 kg and costs
P4,000- P5,000 a kilo, making it the most expensive
fish in the country. It commands a very high price in
the market because it is seasonal and difficult to
catch.

• Decreased volume of catch


• Ludong being caught were getting smaller in size

• banning illegal fishing nets such as fyke nets or tanggar which


are intended to catch Ludong
• strict implementation of Waste Management
