COMPONENTS OF FOOD

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY COMPONENTS OF FOODS?

Food composition data (FCD) are detailed sets of


information on the nutritionally
important components of foods and provide
values for energy and nutrients including protein,
carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals and for
other important food components such as fibre
MAJOR SOURCES OF FOOD ARE:-

1. carbohydrates
2. fats
3. proteins
4. vitamins
CARBOHYDRATES

Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches and fibers


found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk
products. Though often maligned in trendy
diets, carbohydrates — one of the basic food
groups — are important to a healthy diet.
FATS

fats are substances that help the body use some


vitamins and keep the skin healthy; they are also
the main way the body stores energy. In food,
there are many types of fats -- saturated,
unsaturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated,
and trans fats
PROTEINS

Proteins are large, complex molecules that play


many critical roles in the body. They do most of
the work in cells and are required for the
structure, function, and regulation of the body's
tissues and organs.
VITAMINS

Vitamins are essential nutrients which enable your


body to work properly and to stay healthy.
Most vitamins can be found in the food that we
eat or from vitamin supplements.
BALANCED DIET

a diet consisting of a variety of different types of


food and providing adequate amounts of the
nutrients necessary for good health.
DEFICIENCY DISEASES

“Deficiency diseases are diseases that are caused


by the lack of certain essential nutrients,
especially vitamins and minerals, in one's diet
over a prolonged period of time.”
TYPES OF DEFICIENCY DISEASES

1.Kwashiorkor- it is caused due to lack of proteins.


The symptoms are stunted growth, anemia,
edema.
2.Night blindness- it is caused due to deficency of
vitamin A.
3. Anemia – it is caused due to the deficiency of
mineral iron in the body. The symptoms are pale
skin, flat and pale nails, dark patches below eyes.
