MECHANISM OF ACTION
• Blocks dopamine neurotransmission at
post synaptic receptor sites. Possesses
strong anticholinergic, sedative, antiemetic
effects; slight antihistamine action.
• Therapeutic effect:
• Improves psychotic conditions; relieves
nausea and vomiting; controls intractable
hiccups and porphyria
INDICATIONS
• Severe Nausea and Vomitting
• Psychotic Disorders
• Intractable Hiccups
• Porphyria
• Renal Impairment
CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Comatose State
• Severe CNS Depression
• Phenothiazine Sensitivity
• Respiratory/Hepatic Renal/Cardiac
Impairement
• History if Alcohol withdrawl
• Seizures
• Urinary Retention
• Prostatic Hyperthropy
• Hypocalcemia
• Myasthenia Gravis
SIDE EFFECTS/ ADVERSE
REACTIONS
• Side Effects:
Drowsiness; Blurred vision; Hypotension; Night /color
vision disturbances; Dizziness; Decreased diaphoresis;
Constipation; Dry mouth; Nasal congestion

Adverse Reactions:
Akathisia; Parkinsonian symptoms; Acute dystonias;
Oculygyric crisis; Tardive dyakinesia
NURSING
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Assess mental status prior to and periodically during therapy.
• Monitor BP for hypotension
• Observe patient carefully when administering medication.
• The drug may be taken with or without food.
• Monitor I and O ratios and daily weight.
• Keep close attention to patients with suicidal tendencies
• Assess for dehydration
• Monitor WBC (To differentiate count for blood dyscrasias)
• Inform doctor if urine darkens
• Report visual disturbances.
• Inform that full therapeutic effects may take up to 6 weeks
