The 

Quiriguá Ruins 
The Quiriguá Ruins are an archaeological site that
belongs to the ancient Mayan civilization . They are
located in the municipality of Los Amates, in Izabal ,
northeast of Guatemala . This location was one of the
greatest testimonies of the Mayan culture and is
currently considered a World Heritage Site .

The site was occupied from 200 AD. C. and it is believed that they were Mayans from
the great city of Tikal The construction of the Acropolis began around 550 AD. C.

Discovery

The Quiriguá ruins were discovered in 1840 by


Frederick Catherwood and John Lloyd
Stephens. Catherwood accompanied the children of
the owner of the place, surnamed Payés, to
investigate them since they only knew of the
existence of the place through stories from their
father
