The events after the battle of Mohács
• After the battle of Mohács the situation in Hungary was chaotic.
• After the death of Louis II. they chose two new kings.
• One of them was John Szapolyai who was the prince of
Transylvania, the other one was Ferdinand I. from the House of
Habsburg.
• There was an inner conflict between them because they both
wanted the whole country.

Assault of Kőszeg
• The Ottoman Sultan wanted Wien for himself.
• He attacked Wien many times but the most important was in
1532, this was the assault of Kőszeg.
• The defender of the castle was Nikolaus Jurisics. They managed
to successfully defend the castle.
• Hungary became the battlefield of the clash between the
Habsburg and the Ottoman Empire.

The Treaty of Grosswardein
• It was a secret peace agreement between Ferdinand I. and John
Szapolyai in 1538.
• Szapolyai recognized Ferdinand as heir to the Hungarian throne, since
he was childless.
• The agreement failed, because Szapolyai had a son, John II. After
Szapolyai died, John II. was elected King of Hungary.
• But Ferdinand wanted the whole country because the agreement.

Siege of Buda
• Sueliman I. captured Buda in 1541.
• In 1541 the country was divided into three parts:
• Middle part: Ottoman Empire (Sueliman I.)
• Western and northen part: Royal Hungary (Ferdinand I.)
• Eastern part: Principality of Transylvania (John II.)
