An INPUT DEVICE is any peripheral

(piece of computer hardware equipment).

Which is used to provide data and control
signals to an information processing system
with computer acceptable language. INPUT
devices make up the hardware interface.
DIFFERENT INPUT DEVICES
• KEYBOARD
• MOUSE
• JOYSTICK
• SCANNER
• TRACK BALL
• TOUCH SCREEN
• DATA GLOVE
• BAR CODE READER
KEYBOARD- The KEYBOARD is a way to
input letters or numbers into different
applications of programs. A keyboard also
has special keys that help operate the
computer. The most popular keyboard used
today is the 101-keys QWERTY keyboard.

A MOUSE function as a point-and-draw device
by detecting two-dimensional motion relative to
its supporting surface. We can use it only with
GUI (Graphical user interface) based on
operating system. E.g. Windows.
The main goal of any mouse is to translate the
motion of your hand into signals that the
computer can use.
MECHANICAL MOUSE- A mouse that uses a rubber
ball that makes contact with wheels inside the unit when
it is rolled on a pad of desktop.
OPERATING OF A MECHANICAL MOUSE:
The mechanical mouse comprises of a ball upon which two rollers turn.
These rollers each comprise of a notched disc which turns between a
photodiode and LED (Light Emitting Diode) allowing the light to pass
through in sequence. When the light passes through, the photodiode
sends a bit (1), when it meets an obstacle, the photodiode sends a zero
bit (0). Using this information, the computer knows the position of the
cursor and even its speed.
OPTICAL MOUSE- A mouse that uses light
to detect movement. It emits a light and senses
its reflection as it is moved. As the user rolls
the mouse on a flat surface, the cursor on the
screen also moves in the direction of the
mouse’s movement.
JOYSTICK- A JOYSTICK is used to move the cursor
from place to place, and allow moves in all directions
and controls the movement of cursor. It offers three
types of control such as digital, glide, direct. They input
directional data like a mouse but work by switches as the
joystick is moved. It consist of a stick that rotate on axis
and reports it angle or direction to the device it is
controlling. A joystick is used mostly for computer
games.
SCANNER- A SCANNER is used to copy
pictures of other things and save them as
files in the computer. A light moves
slowly over the surface of the picture of
object to be scanned. The colors of the
reflected light are detected and digitized
to built up a digital image.
FLATE-BED SCANNER- A FLATE-BED scanner is like a
copier machine consisting of a box having a glass plate on its top
and a lid that covers the glass plate. Its also called desktop
scanners, are the most versatile and commonly used scanners.

SHEET-FED SCANNER- It is similar to FLATE-BED scanner

except the document is moved and the scan head is immobile. A
sheet-fed scanner looks a lot like a small portable printer.

HAND-HELD SCANNER- A HAND-HELD scanner has a set

of light emitting diodes encased a small case that can be held in
hand conveniently to scan a Documents. It is use the same basic
technology as a Flat-Bed scanner. This type of scanner typically
does not provide good image quality. However , it can be useful
for quickly capturing text.
TRACK BALL- A TRACK BALL is used
the same way as a mouse but it is useful
where desk space is limited. It is like an
upside down mouse because the user
rotates the ball and the main body parts
stays still. It has buttons like a standard
mouse.
TOUCH SCREEN- A TOUCH SCREEN is a
computer display screen that is sensitive to
human touch, allowing a user to interact with
the computer by touching pictures or words on
the screen. Touch screens are used with
information, computer-based training devices,
and system designed to help individuals who
have difficulty manipulating a mouse with
keyboard.
LIGHT PEN- A LIGHT PEN is a
hand-held electro-optical pointing input
device that utilize a light-sensitive
detector to allow the computer to
determine where on that screen the pen is
aimed. It facilities drawing images and
select objects on the display screen by
directly pointing the object with the pen.
DATA GLOVE- DATA GLOVE is a
device to interact with animated artificial
object. The person wears a glove fitted
with sensors and electrical wires hooked
to compatible computer. As he rotates or
move his hand and manipulate his fingers,
he can manipulate the graphic object on
the screen.
BAR CODE READER- Bar code is a machine
readable code in the form of a pattern of parallel
vertical lines of varying width which is read by bar
code reader. Bar code reader is a electronic device that
scans a bar code image and converts it into an
alphanumeric value that is feed in a computer which
connected to a Bar code reader. It use a leaser beam
scanning technology. It is commonly use for labeling
Goods in super market, Books in library, Package,
Badges etc.
Scanning Devices
Mark-Recognition and Character-
Recognition Devices
Magnetic-ink character recognition (MCR): It
consists of magnetic ink printed characters of a
special design which can be recognized by high
speed magnetic recognition equipment.   This
series of readable characters provides the receiving
party with information needed for processing the
check including: check number, bank routing
number, checking account number and in some
cases the amount of the check.
Scanning Devices
Mark-Recognition and Character-
Recognition Devices
Optical mark recognition (OMR): used to read
pencil marks like used in tests and converts them into
computer-usable form.
Optical Character recognition (OCR): is the
mechanical or electronic translation of scanned images of
handwritten, typewritten or printed text into machine-
encoded text. It is widely used to convert books and
documents into electronic files, to computerize a record-
keeping system in an office, or to publish the text on a
website. OCR makes it possible to edit the text, search for a
word or phrase, store it more compactly.

Voice-Recognition Systems: It converts
human speech into digital code.
Audio-input devices: Records or plays
analog sound and translates it for digital
storage and processing.
