■ Cahul is an important city and
administrative center of the district in the S-
V part of the Republic of Moldova, located
on the border with Romania. The town is
first mentioned in the 16th century under
the name of Frumoasa, under which it
appears until the 19th century. With over
30,000 inhabitants (2014 General Population
Census), it is the 7th largest city in the
country (after Chisinau, Balti, Tiraspol,
Tighina, Ribnita and Ungheni). It is often
nicknamed the "Southern Capital" of
Moldova

the banks of the Prut River, 175
km from the capital of the
republic - Chisinau. The average
altitude above the Black Sea
level is 119 m, and its surface is
about 33,910,000 m2.
