• Résumé is NOT: Your autobiography or your complete obituary

• IT IS: A document starting your professional credentials

• ITS PURPOSE IS: Not to obtain a job but to obtain an Interview (YOU
get the job)

• Know the purpose of your résumé and who is going to read it.

• Using various strategies back up your qualities and strengths.

• Right key words will accomplish your goal.

• Using effective and relevant titles will make your job easy.

• Always place the most important information first.

• Pay high attention to the typography (Fonts and Sizes):

• Avoid negativity

• Talk more about achievements instead of responsibilities or difficulties.

• Please say “No” to pictures or images or photo.

• Make use of numbers wherever possible.

• Use bullet points

• Be very careful while mentioning your hobbies or else avoid mentioning

• Eliminate all irrelevant information from your résumé

• Always modify your résumé as per the vacancy you are applying for

• Avoid mentioning your age and caste on your résumé

• You should mention only relevant work experience

• Specify gender when needed

• Ideal length – One or Two pages

• Update your résumé on regular basis

• Use formal language and avoid using jargons and slang


Résumé Formats

Chronological

• This format is good for people with extensive work experience either
with one company or a few companies, usually in the field in which
they are seeking employment.

Combination

• This format is good for career changers, those with gaps in employment
and those who want to clearly sell specific skills.
• This résumé format combines a chronological work experience with
skill clusters.

Identification

• Name

• Address

• Telephone numbers

• Email address

Objective

• The objective should tell what you can contribute and demonstrate the value
you will add to the organization.

Summary Statement

• When you have a number of years of experience in a particular field or industry,


this statement is often used as an alternative to an objective or as an addition. It
portrays a summary of your credentials in sentence or paragraph form.

Qualification

Additional Information

• DO include such things as business, professional, social or civic affiliations;


honors and awards; and military service.
• OMIT all personal information including marital status, age, state of health, etc.
Do’s

• Have the résumé professionally typed and print the résumé on standard
letter size

• Use short paragraphs not longer than five lines

• Rewriting a résumé for a specific company is advised

• Do not go too deep about your previous jobs but include your significant
contributions.

• If you are fresher than mention about your main academic projects and
your contribution in them.
Don’ts

• Never show hate about your previous company or your institute if you
are a fresher

• Never describe your hobbies, sports and social activities in more than
two lines

• Avoid your personal philosophies


Don’ts

• Never use exact dates. Months and years are sufficient

• Never include remarks about your physical appearance or health

• Never lie about your achievements, academic records etc

• Never try to gain sympathy
