Indian Ethnic Fashion Industry

 Indian fashion saw its first rise in the 1980s supported by few designers. However, with the economic
boom and exposure to global fashion, Indian fashion saw a rise in the 1990s.

 Indian fashion industry has strongly established itself. Indian fashion designers have made their mark
in the industry with ‘Indian Couture Weeks’ showcasing the latest trends in all kinds of Indian ethnic
wear along with wedding lehengas, sarees in traditional weaves, and unique draping styles, a trendy
and elegant range of salwar suits, etc.

 Indian fashion industry contributes to 4 percent of the GDP of the nation and also yields 20 percent of
industrial output.
Impact of Covid-19

• The global pandemic COVID - 19 as not only brought calamitous repercussions to the
financial status of the businesses but has also divulged the shortcomings they possess.

• The India Fashion industry is worth INR 1000 crore, while the market size is
approximated to be INR 20,000 crore.

• Textile Industry is one among the biggest contributors to the country’s exports with
around 11.4% share in India’s total export earnings for the fiscal period ended 2018-19
valuing to almost USD 37.5 billion (INR 2,596 billion) and growing at a CAGR of
seven since 2004-05. The COVID-19 global pandemic has effects on all 7.8 billion
folks in similar and unique ways.
